We would introduce how to apply some strategies to improve self-assessment specifically in clas activities in this page. It's time to consider how to implement the theories practically!
1. A reference indicator
Before formal self-assessment, students can have a preliminary self-judgment through different dimensions from Anderson and Krathwohl (2001). Based on their self-positioning, more self-assessment skills can be applied in the learning process in order to direct efficient study.
"Metacognitive knowledge is knowledge of [one's own] cognition and about oneself in relation to various subject matters..." (Anderson and Krathwohl, 2001, p.44)
This is also a measurement of the transformation extent from the original knowledge received by the students to the knowledge constructed by the students themselves.
It's very hard to manage the skills that have been listed above in detail. This is because to govern cognitive domain-specific knowledge, we should take the perspective of "high-order cognition about cognition" (Veenman, Hout-Wolters, and Afflerbach, 2005), which is metacognition.
2. Reach higher self-efficacy
Bandura(1994) mentioned that school can be an agency for cultivating cognitive self-efficacy. Therefore, we would offer some strategies and resources that can be applied in building students' self-efficacy.
We have prepared some tips for increasing the level of self-efficacy.
Tips
Group Project.
Cooperative learning structures, in which students work together and help one another also tend to promote more positive self-evaluations and self-assessments of capability and higher academic attainments.
Lead learners to find peers.
Peers who share similar interests and values can affect their personal efficacy and learning passion. Sharing different perspectives from peers can also provide inspirits for innovative work and cultivate more potential for each one.
Hold sessions to list learners’ pros.
Attributional feedback from educators.
This can give effective suggestions in specific-domain to complete learners’ self-conception and supply for their self-assessment.
Periodic summary and review.
Create a positive atmosphere for learners.
Educators and administrators should focus on their self-efficacy firstly and be models for learners.
3. Focus on emotional intelligence
For forming consciousness of emotional intelligence, practical tips that might be used in designing courses are listed.
Tips
Persistent feedback - feedback from other learners and educators can be beneficial.
Discuss their emotions - Mayer (2008) mentioned that sets of abilities involved in reasoning about emotions and emotions can be used to enhance reasoning. Therefore, creating a safe space to label and describe their emotions is important.
Examine how your actions will affect others – before you take those actions. If your decision will impact others, put yourself in their place. How will they feel if you do this? Would you want that experience? If you must take the action, how can you help others deal with the effects?
Re-define the significance in communication – guide students to interpret details in the communication in a new way. For instance, to listen for understanding others rather than listen with the intention of responding.
Mindfulness Meditation – leading students to have a relaxed and regular breath, and to focus on their thoughts and current mental state.
