Supernova

The piece displayed is titled Supernova and was designed by Baltimore-based artist Brandon Buckson.

Supernova showcases the femininity, grace and strength of Black women represented by a mermaid. Oftentimes Black women are regarded as strong, while their femininity is disregarded or taken away from them because of their blackness, build of their bodies or perceived attitude. Black women are more than a monolith and more than tropes that society puts on them. In order to change perception of Black women, we need more images of Black women standing in their strength while still displaying their beauty, because they can, and are, both.
