Happy April and Happy Spring
This April on the Mirkwood Mural we have the wonderfully talented Alaina M. Dorsey.
Title: She Makes Them Bloom
This 8'x4' Acrylic painting with Gold Sumi Ink accent is Alainas return to her fine art background. Currently focusing on computer illustration and character development, Alaina known by the artist name Lainface has stepped back to take on the Mirkwood Estates Tinges Commons
Mural.
Words from the artist on
"She Makes Them Bloom":
Dark skinned Black women with natural hair aren’t readily welcomed in our world, especially in
the overall art industry: we don’t get to be beautiful; we don’t get to be majestic; we don’t get to
be honored and acknowledged for our power. As such, this mural pulls you into the hypnotic
gaze of a woman who has activated the potential of life growing and developing around her.
She is the center of a White and even Asian world.
The flowers are loosely based off of Jasmine Grand of Tuscany, which are Asian flowers. This
Black American woman’s name is Sheena Brown-Matsume: she eventually finds her way to
Japan where paleness is also the height of beauty. However, she will not be made invisible.
After priming the wood with Rust-Oleum gray latex primer, I created the base coat and overall
piece with Golden Heavy Body Acrylics mixed with GAC-200, a medium that strengthened the
durability of the paint and also thinned it to cover the large surface area. Using synthetic
brushes, I applied the flat colors before adding highlights and shadows, accenting with Gold
Golden Fluid Acrylic and eventually “inking” with heavy black paint. Another layer of gold was
added but with Japanese ink. Intentional flicks, splashes and drops of paint were added to
embody the serendipity that comes using traditional media.
Painting this mural was a journey back to my foundation after creating so many digital
illustrations. There’s no Undo; I re-learned how to push forward amidst chaos and to embrace
mistakes while intentionally creating my own. The brush is my sword to fulfill the bidding of
Heaven and Earth: to create inclusiveness, redefine the norms and fight against a world that
continually tells you what’s impossible.
