Happy Black History Month! Did you know it started as Black History Week?
The historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History selected the second week in February to honor Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14). The celebration became widespread across the US in 1976 after President Gerald Ford encouraged Americans to recognize the accomplishments of Black Americans.
This month, the Mirkwood Mural has partnered with High Road Academy of Howard County to present "No Squares in the Winners Circle." The artwork was designed and painted by the students of High Road Academy and features several heroes, including a race horse, gamer, cyborg, warrior, and super hero. The main image is a trophy with the inscription "I Think I Can" and quotes created by the students describing the qualities of a champion.
High Road Academy specializes in individualized programs for students with severe learning difficulties. Their small class sizes and one-on-one attention enable personalized instruction to build on each student's strengths and address identified weaknesses. Their approach empowers students to direct their own lives.
The Mirkwood Mural is grateful for High Road Academy's participation and their efforts to help students. We hope you enjoy the artwork and share it with the community.
