Many universities in Australia offer degrees and study options in Japanese language & culture. You could:
Major in Japanese Studies through a Bachelor of Arts (3 years full-time) or Bachelor of Arts & Education (4 years full-time)
Complete a related degree such as International Studies
Complete a Diploma of Languages (1 year full-time study) alongside another degree.
You will be placed in Japanese classes based upon your level of fluency.
In addition to language classes, universities may offer units in cultural or contemporary study.
You can apply for the opportunity to spend one or two semesters studying abroad at a university in Japan as part of your degree.
Plan ahead
It is highly recommended that you plan your overseas exchange before beginning your degree.
Advisors at your university can assist you with this, including planning when to go/apply and which units would count to your degree.
Some partner overseas universities may offer units in your chosen major which can be counted in your degree, as well as Japanese language units.
Overseas study can only count to up to half of your units to qualify for a major (so if you are doing the Diploma of Languages, up to 6 months of study).
Financial support
Students in a Commonwealth supported place can access OS-HELP financial support (which will be added to your HECS loan) to help fund your study abroad.
As of 2024, you can receive between $9,504 - $10,767 as a loan to support study abroad in Asia for 6 months if it includes languages study.
Additional information

The hosting university will help you to apply for accommodation, as well as select your units of study.
While on a student visa, you will be able to work up to 28 hours a week while you study.
