Modern day Paris is one of the most influential and culturally diverse cities in the world. Miraculous accurately and tactfully represents the many different inhabitants of Paris through its diverse main cast. Unlike many western shows, which overwhelmingly tend to prominently cast white characters, Miraculous not only features many characters of different ethnicities, but also explores those characters' respective cultures without deviating from the main plot and setting of the show.
Contrary to many other television shows that attempt at ethnic and cultural diversity, Miraculous' inclusion of these characters' cultures does not feel forced and fits harmoniously in with the main plot of the show. Because of this, the show's inclusiveness feels genuine and realistic, compared to many other pieces of media that push "diversity" in order to reach a quota or establish some sort of political correctness.
Synopsis:
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (2015-Present) is a French children's animated television show created by Thomas Astruc and Jeremy Zag. The show follows Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, two Parisien teens. Gifted with a strange and ancient power called the Miraculous, they are granted the power to transform into the superheros Ladybug and Cat Noir, respectively. The identities of the holders are kept secret from the world and each other, and, as Marinette and Adrien are classmates, the show's infamous love triangle emerges. The two fight against the supervillian Hawk Moth, who uses the stolen Miraculous of the Butterfly to "akumatize" (take control of and manipulate) civilians who feel strong negative emotions to do his bidding and defeat Ladybug and Chat Noir in order to obtain their Miraculous. With the Miraculous of the Ladybug and the Cat, which represent the concepts of creation and destruction respectively, one can combine the two to make any one wish; a wish that could destroy the entire world. Hawk Moth desperately wants this wish to bring his late wife back from death. Ladybug and Cat Noir must stop him from reaching his goal, as the fate of the universe is at stake.
The two main characters of the show are Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste. Their friend group and the rest of the main cast consists of several key characters. For the purpose of this analysis, Marinette, Kagami, Alya, and Chloé will be the key characters of this discussion. Each of these characters' cultures is integral to the plot and therefore to the integrity of the series.
