Many of the Minyo that have lasted throughout Japan's time have been reworked and re-contextualized, though retaining the roots of the contents.
The Japanese Obon festival, where ancestors are venerated and are said to visit their families acts as the predominant frame through which Minyo are performed in the modern world.
Minyo are also used as a means of preserving local traditions and establishing a sense of group belonging. When everyone from the same town can tell the history of their home through the ritual of Minyo it stregthens the community and informs outsiders on the identity of the folkgroup.
Minyo competitions, local tourism and preservation societies are also ways that the Minyo tradition carries on. These outlets provide opportunies for those interested and help to feed the local economy such towns.
Minyo in its community based practice, can trascend the barrier between audience and performer, educating those coming from different parts of the world around the customs of Japan and directly contributing to the perpetuation of Minyo in the modern world.
