At the age of five, Sonnet's elven clan was attacked by magisters. Most did not survive. In the chaos she was taken by Magister Kiefer  —  a talented man just over forty years of age, one of many interrogators within their ranks, trained to torture others for confessions and pleasure. 

Keifer considered Sonnet his ward and another prisoner. While she was not often subject to torture personally, for years she lived in the same cells the others did, albeit with more accommodations — mere feet away from screams and bone-breaking. During this time, Sonnet discovered her love for reading, which transported her to another plane. 

At sixteen, Keifer was bent on forging Sonnet into his own — forcing her to participate in interrogations that led to dissection. Failure meant punishment. Sonnet's mental health deteriorated; she suffered severe psychosomatic issues (blindness and vertigo that prevented her from walking), disallowing her from meeting Keifer's standards. 

At twenty, she overheard him speaking to a fellow magister about how she was useless, and should be disposed of. Frantic, Sonnet took advantage of the only magisters who was kind to her in passing, and made her escape. 

She lived three years in the wild, looking over her shoulders for crimson fabric. However, isolation offered a boon — Sonnet had a talent for summoning, and nurtured her abilities in the evening. Though knavish summons were meant for combat, she treated them as family, unable to function without them — so they fought for her in turn. 

The first time Sonnet made a trip into a town, one of the guards appeared suspicious. On her second trip to the marketplace, she was apprehended.

She'd wake on a boat, swaying with the waves, wearing a collar.
