When you talk about the power of a mini bike engine, rarely will you talk in terms of HP or Horse Power. The general tendency is to refer to it in terms of cc. This is because the engines are marked and referred in cc, right from the manufacturers to the dealers of spare parts and it is natural that the buyers also follow suit. However, when it comes to the power of the engine, HP is a factor that needs to be considered though it is not right to use HP and cc interchangeably.
Take the case of the mini bike 6.5 HP engine which roughly translates into 212cc power. But it would be wrong, technically speaking to talk about them in the same breath. This is because while HP is a measure of the power of the engine, cc or cubic centimeters measures the volume of the displacement of the cylinders of the engine.
The reason why both are treated parallelly is because of the theory that the larger (or smaller) the displacement of the cylinders, the more (or less) will be the power of the engine. Hence, both HP and cc have come to be intricately linked and a 6.5 hp engine can be roughly termed as a 212 cc one.
Even then, the two – HP and cc – are not entirely straightforward equations. A lot of factors also have to be taken into account as the power of the engine can be increased dramatically by tinkering with the parts while the displacement of the cylinders remains the same. The power of a 6.5 engine can be increased manifold by changing the compression ratio of the motor, the placement of the valves, how fast the motor runs, the fuel/carburetor injection system, and the type of fuel used. You can also try adding a turbocharger/supercharger and modifying the cooling and the timing system for the same results.
All these have a great bearing on the output and power of a 6.5 hp engine.
A note of caution here though. It is not that you can infinitely increase the power of an engine. A mini bike is made of a large number of components and all of them work in tandem. Changing a section of them without suitable modifications in the others can upset the delicate balance of a mini bike and jeopardize your riding safety. Before you try any modifications, consult a specialist or experts in this field on how to go about it. Increasing the power without strengthening the frame or fork or having the precise gear ratio can weaken the structure of the mini bike as a whole.
Finally, think twice before attempting to improve the power of your mini bike’s 6.5 hp engine. The average cc of a mini bike ranges from 49 to 100 cc only so at 212cc, you already have a powerful one.
