Mini Crate Shelf
Hey everyone, welcome back to Life is Messy But I Am Learning as I Grow! Today, we’re diving into a fun, affordable DIY project that’s perfect for adding a little personality to your space. We’re making a cute little desk or wall-hanging shelf to display small knick-knacks, toys, mini plants, or whatever else you love to show off. It’s a great way to organize and decorate at the same time! For this project, we’re using those mini wooden crates from Dollar Tree—yep, just a few bucks and a bit of creativity goes a long way. Whether you want to keep it simple or paint and decorate it to match your style, this is an easy craft that’s totally customizable. So let’s jump right in and start putting it together!
Let’s make it:
Gather Your Supplies
You’ll need mini wooden crates from Dollar Tree (about 3 to 6, depending on how big you want your shelf), hot glue and wood glue, paint or stain (optional), a paintbrush, Clamps, Jute Rope and hanging hardware if you plan to hang it on the wall.
Plan Your Layout
Arrange your crates on a flat surface to decide how you want your shelf to look. You can stack them vertically, arrange them in a row, or get creative with an asymmetrical design.
Paint or Stain Your Crates (Optional)
Customize your shelf by painting the crates any color you like, or use wood stain for a more rustic look. Let them dry completely before moving on.
Glue the Crates Together
Use wood glue for a strong, long-lasting hold. Apply glue where the crates touch and press them together firmly. Use claps or clips to hold your crates while they dry completely.
Attach Hanging Hardware (If Wall-Mounting)
If you plan to hang your shelf, add jute rope or add sawtooth hangers, picture hangers, or even command strips to the back. Make sure everything is level before hanging.
Style and Display
Now for the fun part—decorate your new shelf! Add mini plants, collectibles, toys, figurines, or whatever makes you smile.
Display Ideas:
Here are three fun and creative display ideas for your Dollar Tree crate shelf:
Mini Toy Display
Use the shelf to showcase small collectible toys like Funko Pops, mini action figures, LEGO builds, or vintage figurines. You can even add some LED fairy lights to highlight your collection!
Mini Plant Shelf
Turn your shelf into a mini indoor garden with tiny succulents, air plants, or faux greenery. Add a small jar of pebbles or a cute watering can for extra charm.
Seasonal Decor Station
Change it up with the seasons! Use the shelf to display small holiday-themed items—like mini pumpkins in the fall, snowmen or ornaments in the winter, or hearts and flowers for spring. It's an easy way to keep your space feeling festive year-round.
And that’s it—your very own custom shelf made from Dollar Tree crates! Whether you’re using it to show off your favorite little treasures, organize a workspace, or add some charm to a room, this project is such a fun and budget-friendly way to get creative. I hope this inspired you to try it out and make it your own.
