"Thoughts let us into realities. Neither miracle nor magic nor any religious tradition, not the immortality of the private soul is incredible, after we have experienced an insight, a thought." - Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Inspiration"
The Mind on Fire Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to lifelong learning, inner growth, and the pursuit of wisdom through the great works of philosophy, literature, and history.
We bring people together in small, discussion-based sessions to explore big questions through enduring texts—from Plato and Pascal to Montaigne and contemporary science fiction.
At MOFI, learning isn’t about credentials—it’s about transformation. Our sessions are rigorous yet personal, open to mystery yet grounded in reason. In a fast-paced world, we offer slowness. In a fragmented culture, we offer synthesis. And in a lonely time, we offer rare companionship: people thinking deeply together.
Founded and directed by Elias Brockman, adjunct professor at Baruch College and Temple University, MOFI builds on six years of successful pilot programs and continues to grow.
Current offerings include:

Pascal’s Pensées
On the Nature of Things (Lucretius)
