Have you ever struggled to write up your results into a publishable paper only to get it rejected? Richard Threlfall, Managing Editor, Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry, gives some insider tips on how to improve the language of your article.

Bringing Your Message to the Reader/Editor/Reviewer

The thesaurus function is very convenient in the popular word processing packages for finding all sorts of alternative and more complicated words for whatever you want to say. However, as Oppenheimer showed in the study cited at the beginning of the first part, complicated words may sound impressive to you, but they often have the opposite effect on your reader. A reader/editor/reviewer may be turned off and may well miss the whole point of your manuscript if it is unnecessarily dressed up in difficult language.

You probably have similar stories of your own, painful memories, perhaps of school, perhaps of work, that still rankle and nag at the back of your mind. They are formative, they cut deep and live long. They scar self-confidence and they shape (if we let them) the people we become.

Talking to your team is a thankless responsibility. It is your job to coach them, hype them up and keep them motivated. While it can be easy to often say the first thing that pops into your mind, these words can hurt or be detrimental if not thoroughly thought through.

Complicating matters is the nonverbal cues you add to the discussion. You may have heard the stats that say that communication is a nonverbal game. According to a report by Psychology Today, communication is 55% body language, 38% tone of voice, and 7% actual words spoken. With these numbers in mind, it can be easy to give the wrong impression to your team if you give off mixed signals when trying to get your point across.

As a leader, it is critical for your success to actively put into practice communication strategies with your company members. By listening and studying how individuals communicate, you can adjust your way of responding and interacting. It will be easier for you to model, mirror or alter your language patterns, speed, style and words if you know the best way they like to engage. - Tyron Giuliani, Selling Made Social

Although it is great to get feedback from others, recording yourself using audio and video will give you the best impression of what others are seeing and hearing. It will also help you pick up on the little things that others may not tell you, such as how many times you say "ummm" or how your body language is being perceived. - LaKesha Womack, Womack Consulting Group

Communication is a combination of spoken words and body language. Before you start a conversation or meeting, take a minute to take inventory of what's happening physically with you. Are your shoulders tight? Are you scowling? Being aware of your physical state will empower you to be more self-aware. The increased self-awareness will help you communicate more effectively. - Denise King Gillingham, DKG Coaching

Play pretend for a moment. Pretend you're a member of your team. What do they care about? What worries them? Let their perspective guide your language and communication. You can take it a step further and do a reverse role play. Have someone you trust be you, and you can be a member of your team. Have that person deliver the message. You will experience what it's like for them, and that will provide perspective. - Brad Federman, F&H Solutions Group

Practice makes perfect. Spend time preparing for key meetings or communications with your team. Dry run your language with a coach or key stakeholder and ask for feedback on the impact that language is having. This will give you time to ensure the intent of your message is aligned with the impact on those receiving the communication. - Amy Douglas, Spark Coaching, LLC
