Mind on Crime is a podcast about the science behind true crime hosted by Natalie, Kathleen, and Erin. We are three good friends who are all doing a PhD, love science, and are also obsessed with true crime. Join us to hear about true crime and what science has to say about it.

Erin has — somehow — managed to escape being murdered for her 28 year existence. From hitchhiking alone in Australia to couchsurfing with strangers, Erin became interested in true crime as a means of self-preservation. Erin is doing her PhD in clinical psychology studying sexual consent and sexual assault. She also has research experience in forensic psychology and the criminal justice system.

Kathleen’s love of true crime started early, probably in the womb, as her mom is a true crime and mystery enthusiast. Despite never watching a Disney movie as a kid, she can still remember watching Law & Order with her parents when she was in grade school, which turned into watching all the crime shows and documentaries she could find. She is doing her PhD in cognitive neuroscience, with a focus on the brain and cognitive development. She loves learning about the brain, statistics, and good scientific practices.

As a farm kid Natalie spent her time perched in trees or wandering the fields following animal tracks – all in the hopes of meeting a wolf. After extensive research she was pretty sure she could communicate with one if given the chance – a notion that was quickly dispelled when she came face to face with a mangey coywolf in her barn. Soon her interest in predators grew to include the human variety – How are they made? What makes them attack? Can they ever be tamed? Her research experience includes the neurobiology of addiction and disorders of consciousness. She’s now doing her PhD in neuroscience focusing on pain and how it’s represented in the brain.
