Overview
Mind Jar ("we", "our", or "the app") is a private digital mind jar application designed with privacy as its core principle. This privacy policy explains how the app handles your data.
Data Collection
We do not collect any personal data.
- All your echoes (text, moods, tags, voice recordings and photos) are stored only on your device.
- The app does not send your echoes, or any information about them, to us or to any server.
- No analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind.
- No user accounts or registration.
Data Storage
- Your echoes' text, moods, tags and dates are stored in a database encrypted with AES-256. The encryption key is kept in your device's secure key storage (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore).
- Voice recordings and photos are stored as files inside the app's private storage area and are encrypted with the same AES-256 key as your echoes. While a voice note is playing, a temporary decrypted copy exists in the app's private cache and is removed afterwards.
- Yearbook PDFs you save in the app are encrypted with the same key as your echoes.
- You can protect access to the app with Face ID, Touch ID or your fingerprint.
Permissions
Mind Jar requests the following permissions, used only for on-device features:

Third-Party Services
- In-App Purchases (Apple App Store / Google Play): purchases are processed entirely by Apple or Google. We never receive your payment details.
- Google Play Age Signals (Android only): before showing purchase options, the app asks Google Play whether your account is a supervised account, so purchases can be blocked for minors where the law requires it. Google returns only an age-range status; the app keeps it in memory and does not store or share it.
No other third-party services are used, and the app makes no other network connections.
Backups
- Backups are created only when you choose to export them. Every backup is encrypted with a password you choose (AES-256; the key is derived from your password with PBKDF2). Mind Jar cannot recover a forgotten backup password. Backups made by earlier versions (plain ZIP files) can still be restored.
- On Android, the app's data is excluded from automatic Google cloud backup and device-to-device transfer, because the encryption key cannot leave your device. Use the in-app backup to move to a new phone.
Data Sharing
We never share your data because we never have access to it.
Data Retention
Your data stays on your device until you:
- Move echoes to the Trash. Items in the Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days, or immediately when you empty the Trash or delete them permanently.
- Uninstall the app or clear its data in your device settings.
Because everything is stored on your device, you are responsible for keeping backups. We cannot recover data from a lost or damaged device.
Children's Privacy
Mind Jar does not collect data from anyone, including children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date above.
