DEPARTMENT COURSES
INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE: An acting based classed designed to build confidence while exploring different aspects of stage acting exercises to build self-esteem, trust and empathy are integrated with the technical aspects of drama. Basic stage terms are taught, vocal and movement exercises as well as writing activities are incorporated.
Prerequisite: None. All incoming Freshmen will be placed into Introduction without an audition.
INTERMEDIATE THEATRE: An acting based class that focuses more on the specific skills needed in performing. This course provides the opportunity to strengthen basic skills of voice and movement, play analysis and interpretation, and performance.
Prerequisite: Anyone with a B or higher in Introduction to Theatre OR with teacher approval.
ADVANCED THEATRE: This acting based class utilizes students’ strengths in acting and expands their repertoire of skills into the areas of writing and directing. Students study different schools of acting and acting methods to hone their acting skills. Each year we work with a playwright, who mentors students to write their own plays.
Prerequisite: Anyone with a B or higher in Intermediate Theatre OR with teacher approval.
PLAY PRODUCTION: This class focuses on the behind the scenes aspects of theater. The extent of their skills, ability and extensive training is showcased in seasonal play productions where they are responsible for elements, such as costuming, hair and makeup, sound and music, grips (set moving), props, and advertising. Students can take this course multiple times, but must re-audition every year. Mandatory after school, evening, and weekend rehearsals and performances; these are graded assignments.
Prerequisite: Earned a B or higher in a previous theatre course (Introduction, Intermediate, or Advanced Theatre) AND audition (includes application and project submission).
* All courses will meet the “f” or “g” entrance requirement for the University of California State Systems.
MILLIKAN DRAMA CLASS AUDITIONS FOR 2024 - 2025
CURRENT 9th - 11th GRADE STUDENTS:
Placement in Intermediate and Advanced Theatre will be based on previous theatre courses taken at Millikan or other high school. See above for prerequisites.
Placement in Play Production will be based off of an audition and you MUST have taken a high school theatre course prior to auditioning for this course. Auditions will occur by appointment only. Click here for more details about the Play Production Auditions.
INCOMING FRESHMEN:
There will be no auditions for the 2024-2025 school year for incoming freshmen. All Freshmen will be placed in Introduction to Theatre.
MILLIKAN IMPROV TEAM
Millikan has a competitive and award-winning Improv Team. Auditions for the team are held annually in the first few weeks of the school year. Any student enrolled in a Millikan Theatre course may audition. Audition information will be announced the first week of the school year.
