Description In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in twenty-four weeks than AIDS has killed more people in twenty-four years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. Major Thesis There are so many things in this world that have yet to be discovered, but for them to be discovered, scientists have to be willing to explore the unknown. Question to address Will another influenza pandemic occur? If so, how dangerous will it be and what threat does the H5N1 virus present? How prepared are we for it and what can we do to better prepare? Reviewer Comment “Spellbinding…a compelling and scary read.” The San Diego Union-Tribune “ A writer of distinction with a deep philosophical underpinning…compelling and brilliant.” -Journal of the American Medical Association “Terrifying.” - Newsweek “Fascinating.” - The Washington Post “Sobering.” - The Boston Globe Scientists Concern ‘’“ Likely” and “ probably” to warn of the chances of a pandemic in the immediate future.”” - WHO & CDC Limitation: Not confirmed evidence to indicate the flu started in Kansas.. c
