Once you’re 180 days from transition, you can get approval from the first O5 in your CoC to work unpaid for a civilian employer while still receiving active duty pay. If you are accepted to one of these programs, we recommend reading our fellowship timeline below. You can do any of these programs outside of your local area, you will just need O6 approval to be put on PTDY. If you are put on PTDY, you will still receive your original BAH. We encourage you to contact your own education center office and the Career Skills Program advisors and counselors at your installation for the latest document requirements as these can change constantly.

Focus on fully understanding the industry you are working in, asking questions to different departments, and building your network on LinkedIn. This should be a time to transition into the civilian workforce, and not to stress out about what is coming next. You have worked hard to get here, and should focus all of your time and energy on absorbing everything you can about the company and industry. You have been doing this your entire career in the military.
See if you have the ability to go through the company’s onboarding training that they offer new full/part-time employees. This will not only give you a great foundation within the industry and company but a means of immersing yourself as if you are an actual employee.
Take on a project that is outside of your military experience to prove to yourself early on that you are just as competitive as any other civilian and to learn something new to take forward.
Determine if you think a full-time position in this company aligns with your career goals. Work with HR to gain exposure to an area that you would like to work in or where you think your best fit would be in full time.
Determine what industry certifications/knowledge would be helpful if you continue in this career, and find time to work on professional development courses.
If you would rather keep your options open and continue searching for another position after this fellowship, take the time to understand the industry language and focus on refining your resume.
Regardless of whether you are participating in a personal internship or through Hiring our Heroes, there is an implicit agreement in the program paperwork to hire full-time at the end of your fellowship. These final weeks are where you should have the more detailed, explicit conversations with HR or your supervisor on the intent to hire you.
This should not be a mystery, and you should know whether you need to fully focus on your job hunt or what you need to do to prepare for full-time employment. You will also need to be clear about your prospects of working there full-time and if you can expect an offer, or whether you will be moving in a different direction.
If accepting a full-time offer, ensure they are aware of your transition/clearing schedule.
Understand Benefits, Salary, hierarchy, etc... again, this should not be a mystery or a surprise from your time in the company.
