Enrolling in this course could not be more timely than today’s information age, wherein information functions as a powerful commodity and resource. In this post-pandemic world, we must know by how prevalent fake news, clickbait titles, online & text scams, influencer culture, and misleading online content are that undermine the value of authentic and high-quality information and media sources, such as academic journals, books, and official news channels, especially in the Philippines.

This course is aligned with UNESCO’s belief that in today’s information age, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is a human right as much as the right to read and write (i.e., literacy) is.
Integrating MIL to formal education is necessary, but it should not stop there. The goal is not to limit MIL to media practitioners, but to extend it to lay media consumers. Thus, MOOCs such as this one are encouraged in order to produce media and information literate societies.
