I was lucky enough to have a job that enabled me to travel all across the Highlands and afford me some amazing photo opportunities.
Where the car gave up, my mountain bike took over and I’ve found some incredible, isolated spots just off the beaten track
If I can cycle to these places then anyone can and as well as enabling great photo opportunities it also gets you a bit of fresh air and exercise
These are some of the photos you'll come across in the galleries which can be accessed via the buttons top right. I'm quite a lazy photographer so I do most of my shooting in Aperture Priority mode, F13 for Landscapes & F6 for Wildlife close ups. All other settings are on auto for the camera to decide. The Galleries have both "navigation" buttons and "click to enlarge" buttons but they are fairly simple find your way around
The Affric Way
I am quite often amazed by the beauty of some of the places I've cycled to that I lose track of how remote some of these places actually are. I do panic a bit when I realise I'm absolutely miles from any help if I come off the bike (which I frequently do) however these feelings are quickly banished when I simply accept the absolute solitude of my surroundings and go on to enjoy some amazing photo opportunities.
Loch Broom from Corrieshalloch
The highlands boast numerous glens featuring miles of excellent cycling trails. Many of these tracks are lined with streams and forests, often culminating in a stunning loch at the trail's end. A reliable mobile app can guide you to the best tracks in the highlands, complete with distance and elevation profiles to prepare you for your journey. Thanks to the Land Reform Act, we have the privilege of accessing these beautiful locations, however please keep in mind that it’s a "right of responsible access," not an unrestricted free-for-all.
Right Place Right Time
Hair Washing Day
I heard the commotion and when I looked out side here was this sparrow with its head completely submerged. Google reckons it might be trying to get rid of mites
Airborne Attack
I heard the Red Kite circling and when it came in for the final attack I had the camera ready. I'm not 100% sure what it was after but whatever it was it missed !!
Going for Gold
I was trying to catch the Great Tits going into the nest so the camera was set on a high speed anyway. All of a sudden this Tit shot out of the nest like an Olympic ski jumper so I just fired off 6 shots and this one was just perfect
The Challenge
It's been quite a challenge doing this as the web design doesn't work in the same way that my brain does and trying to get content to fit every platform (desktop, chromebook, smartphone) etc and still look okay proved to be a bit of a challenge.
I've tried this on every platform now and it seems to work ok however it definitely looks its best when viewed in Desktop mode. The galleries seem to behave differently on each different platform but you soon figure out how to get the best viewing experience
