The opportunities and challenges of living and working on the base station
A speech written by Mikhaella Anastasia
1. Good morning everyone, it was an honour to be here sharing about the opportunities and challenges of living and working on the base station. First of all, I would like to point out the various jobs and what it involves on base station. There are: scientists, biologists, mechanics, pilots, and cooks. Scientists are the ones involved doing the laboratory work, biologists are the ones who will dive routinely to study and discover, engineers are the ones who will be in charge in the equipment section, pilots is the ones who will control the ship, and lastly the cook which provide foods.
Next, I would like to tell on what to expect once you arrived on the base station. This place has a lot of visitors on it. They usually come either to do research or a study. Once you get here, you should be able to adapt with the situation with no internet connection. That is why, maintaining a healthy lifestyle would be an important task too.
When working at the Antarctic base station, you should be able to bear with the freezing environment. This place would also be dangerous as scientists and biologists are still working on their discovery, so wild animals might still exist. However, the plus point of staying here is that the experience of living in Antarctica was a unique experience. There are fascinating views that you would have not seen yet from any places. In addition, living here would also help you in understanding about the world better for example the Earth’s climate.
All right, that is all I can share for today. I hope that you, the young people learn something from my speech today. By this time, you should be able to identify the opportunities and challenges you may face by living in this Antarctic base station.
The vanishing of Kiki
A narrative written by Mikhaella Anastasia
It’s my birthday today. As I woke up at 07:00 am in the morning, the first thing I saw was my beautiful white dress I bought yesterday. I love that dress! The colour, design, size, it just seems perfect. Excitedly, today I dressed up as a princess. I went downstairs and saw my mom holding an egg on her hand. Well, I’m guessing that my mom right now must be working on my chocolate birthday cake I requested two weeks ago. I don’t want to disturb her morning baking session, instead, I went to the garden to see my dad.
As soon as I’m outside, I looked upwards. Looking at the sunny sunshine, I smiled. I’m super grateful. The world seems to notice that a princess was born today. I closed my eyes enjoying the singing birds chirping and the indistinct sound of the leaves dancing as the wind blows.
“Good morning sweetheart. Happy birthday! Come here, I will give you my biggest hug!” my dad shouted.
Cheerfully, I ran towards him. But suddenly, not long after that, we heard mom’s voice calling us.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Kiki! Do you guys know where is Kiki? I didn’t saw her anywhere today!”
She seemed terrified. I could clearly spot the expression of being worried on her face. I walk around the house but seems like my mom was right, my white kitten- Kiki was gone.
I decided to check on the backyard, hoping that Kiki was there. But I’m wrong, she’s not there. We searched for her everywhere. My dad, mom and I decided to split our tasks. I’m responsible to look for Kiki around our house whereas my mom was responsible on asking the complex’s security, and my dad was responsible to look for Kiki around the complex.
We spent all day looking for Kiki, since it’s been tiring enough, I went to my room balcony. Surprisingly, I saw Kiki there. I grabbed my phone and called my parents. Everyone was relieved that finally Kiki was found.
An hour after, we ate our dinner together. I’m not satisfied with my birthday. Even though we found Kiki today, but it seems like everyone forgot the fact that it is my birthday. The celebration I imagined didn’t happened today. While eating, I felt something is touching my shoulder.
“Don’t be sad darling. Let’s go to the park tomorrow and celebrate your birthday there,” she pouted.
I smiled and nodded. Well, at least, I still have the chance to celebrate my birthday tomorrow. This time, I must make sure that Kiki will not cause any troubles.

In this digital era, there are billions of resources people can get information from. The number of articles, comments, and reviews is uncontrollable. During this time, it gets harder for teenagers to seek reliable information. There is way too much fake information which makes it harder to classify whether the information found was true. Then in this case, who should they really listen to?
Nowadays, whenever young people are faced with a situation that involves decision-making, it’s easy for them to come up with the idea of referring through the internet. They tend to forget the fact that hoax is everywhere. In reality, experts suggest that 20% of comments posted on review websites are actually fake. This must not be a surprise for you, right? Despite we all know that everyone can write and post anything.
Aside from the internet, teenagers are also likely to be influenced by artists. It’s unbelievable that these days young people could put their trust in someone who they don’t even know. I personally think that this matter should be taken seriously. Don’t you think the same way? One possible solution is parents’ guidance. Adult supervision should be there to guide young people in selecting and filtering information.
On the other side, most people would also suggest reaching out to experts. But is it possible? The main factor of not considering referring to experts is because of communication barriers. Experts like to use specific terms that common people can’t understand. As a result, people are likely to ignore this alternative. For me, I also actually think the same way. Looking for experts is taking too much time and sometimes not understandable.
In conclusion, I think the internet is a great way to look for information. Not just that it is fast, but we can access them everywhere and anytime. However, while using, you should always filter out information that is found to be inconsistent and possibly fake. Lastly, double-checking the information to experts through books or simply meeting them in person would be a solution.
How far has the latest technologies brought us?
A magazine artcile written by Mikhaella
The existence of the internet has been very helpful for people around the world. Life has been increasingly efficient and connected. However, what people might don’t know about is how dark these technologies can be.
Internet is playing such an important role in everyone’s life. People views internet as a necessity to do day-to-day activities. It feels like impossible to get rid of the internet for even just one day. These technologies have driven people insane. At school, office, and even at home, internet has always taken full of our attention. Whether it is for work or entertainment, the desire of staying up all night with internet is uncontrollable.
However, in the other side, what we may not know is that the internet is always tracking you. In fact, they keep data about yourself, your family, and friends which you may have even forgotten. Your personal information is recorded. They even know your interests, the time you used for working and playing, and much of other psychological behaviour. It feels unbelievable to know that the internet has known and understand yourself better. The latest technologies make use of your unconscious habits to collect information for sale. By now, knowing the potential of being “too exposed”, you should have been more aware on what you are putting to your devices.
In terms of responding towards the technologies, there are various types of people. The first one is the ones who is desiring for social status so called as the “early adopters”, the second was the “for work property” ones, and lastly the normal people. How people react on the tech industry are extremely different. This creates social status differences. It correlates with how people act towards others. These days, people tend to underestimate other just by seeing what device they are using.
In conclusion, technologies are pleasant to use. As long as you can limit and control yourself while using, then these devices created will be very beneficial. You should be a smart user to take advantage of the technology.
A narrative written by Mikhaella Anastasia
I was sitting at the dining table when suddenly I heard my mom shouting. “Oh no! my wallet is not in my purse!” she anxiously stood up looking around trying to find her lost wallet. She searched for her wallet in her other purse but it wasn’t there. She ran upstairs and searched for it in her bed but it wasn’t there either. As she was busy looking for the lost wallet, her phone rang.
I picked up the phone and saw my dad’s name written. “Upcoming call from dad mommy! Don’t you want to pick up the call first?” However, she doesn’t seem to care. She ignored the phone call and was still busy in search of her lost wallet. I put my mom’s phone back on the table and waited for her.
Instead, she grabbed the car keys and went outside the house. When I asked her where she’s going, she answered hesitantly “Nora’s house Maybe my wallet is with her ”. Nora is my mom’s best friend. I followed her to the car and sat in the front seat. I leaned back on the chair and saw the light streets were on. I noticed the unpleasant expression she showed me.
When we arrived, I saw my mom rushing towards Nora’s house, knocking on the door. “Nora, are you at home?” but no one answered. I waited for her in the car but nothing seemed to work out. Mom came inside the car again and drove me back to the house.
Minutes and hours have passed but it seems like nothing happened. Mom looked worried but there’s nothing much I could do. I walked slowly towards her. “Mom, relax. I believe that your wallet isn’t going anywhere.” Carefully I touched her shoulders and calmed her. As I was talking with my mom, dad came home.
“Honey I’m home! Wait what’s wrong?” As dad entered the house, he realized how messy the house is. Everything is not in the right place. He saw the yellow pillow on the couch was horribly in the kitchen, blankets are all on the floor, dishes are left unwashed, clothes are hanging everywhere, and bags are all over the place. He has no idea what happened.
Mom didn’t reply. Instead, she cried. “Mom lost her wallet, dad,” I said. Dad looked confused and checked his phone. “Why didn’t you answer my call?” Dad spoke carefully. Hearing that, mom took a deep breath and tried to calm down.
While sobbing, she said “I was busy searching for my wallet. Yet, I couldn’t find it.” It took a while for my dad to say something. Once he opened his mouth, he laughed. “Your wallet is in the car. I want to tell you this but you didn’t answer my call” he said. Mom was surprised and relieved.

Smartphone for photography, is it suitable?
Written by: Mikhaella Anastasia
Photography has always depended on technology, and every change in technology has affected the history of photography, but the smartphone, in its nature, is a device that is not for photography. It’s a device that is for communication,” Henry Jacobson.
As I went through and read the quote written by Henry Jacobson above, I had 2-3 minutes thoughts of realizing that photography has had a great instance of development throughout the years. Countless changes have appeared in photography. As time passes by, there are numerous devices we can use for capturing. Smartphones were one of the invented items and today, cameras are just one of the most useful features every smartphone should have.
Personally, I absolutely agree with what it's stated in the quote above that photography is dependent on technology. I believe that this is true and reliable. In fact, the first camera invented was called camera obscura in the 11th century. That time, this type of camera couldn't even record and the images were also still upside down. In contrast to what we have nowadays, which usually was digital cameras that can afford to capture high quality and realistic pictures. As researchers are working on the development of photography, cameras today are available on smartphones. This plays a crucial role in people’s lives. Everything becomes easier, flexible, and multifunctional. However, smartphones themselves are actually not mainly intended for photography. Smartphones were originally created as a medium of communication. It is intended to connect people from far distances. Using a smartphone will only make photography look less professional.
But, on the other hand, I also think that smartphones can actually be used for photography. We should understand that as the era changes, things are designed to be more multi-functional. The presence of smartphone cameras come up very handy which makes it easier for people to take quick shots wherever they were. Comparing on smartphone camera with the digital ones, I could say that the quality it produces isn't that far. So, in other words, there are plenty of smartphone camera which provide impressive advanced cameras which are suitable for photography. By that, smartphones might be able to replace digital camera ones.
In conclusion, I think both ways can be implemented. It is all based on the personal preferences. Some might think that smartphones aren't a device that is for photography, and some might think that smartphones can actually be used for photography. In addition, I also think the idea of whether smartphones are for photography or not also depends on what type of smartphone and photography you are referring to. So now it's your turn to decide, what do you think?

A charity letter written by Mikhaella Anastasia
Dear supporters,
Children are the ones who’s holding the future. However, did you know that there are over 56,000 children who are being sold for sexual exploitation throughout Indonesia? Child trafficking and sexual exploitation is not a problem we should ignore. If we let these cases arise, there will be more innocent victims suffering from the crisis of family and education. Hence, Rumah Mikhaella was created.
Rumah Mikhaella is a non-profit organization aiming to help children from trafficking, abuse, and exploitation. We open safe house to connect children with access to healthcare, services, legal aid, counselling, and academic classes.
As the founder of Rumah Mikhaella, who has been working towards children’s issues for years, I strongly believe that the most effective and efficient way to solve these cases are by having prevention, rescue, and rehabilitation programs. To help the children, we conduct community outreach and work with local law enforcement to investigate more cases. In addition, the fact that we also found 60% of exploitation cases and child labor are using social media, so, we decided to contribute by spreading more awareness related to children’s rights digitally.
With all our hard work, now, there are over 141 children who have been saved, 1,688 children and 71 schools that have been educated about child trafficking, abuse, and exploitation. Moreover, our organization also got awarded by the Vice Governor Kepulauan Riau as a community social institution that cares for the crime of trafficking in persons (TPPO).
However, to secure children’s rights, we need a supportive surrounding community. So, to help the growth of our programs, you can send your financial support by donating through Rumah Mikhaella’s official website. By donating, you can give thousands of suffering children a light of hope. Take note 100% of all donations go to our children. Any amount you give will be highly appreciated and precious to us. Thank you for your support.
Yours faithfully,

A memoir written by Mikhaella Anastasia
“Christmas is the greatest time of the year,” that’s how I would describe how Christmas is for me. I love the warmth and love that are everywhere on Christmas. In my 2017 Christmas season, I and my family spent our holiday visiting families that are far apart from us. Going back to my parent’s hometown has always been one of my all-time favourite travel experiences. I did remember that day, in an early Friday morning, we left Kerinci. We used our black car to Tarutung. Everyone was very excited that day. Glancing towards the sky, that moment I saw the birds chirping. It was still dark when we left Kerinci.
Shortly afterward, after hours of driving, we arrived at Tarutung. I saw colourful lights are hanging outside different stores. There are also Christmas trees with adorable red, yellow, and green decorations along the street, with Christmas songs playing from different houses. As we arrived at my aunt’s house, the first thing I sensed is the savoury aroma of rendang that my aunt has made. My uncles, aunties, and cousins welcomed us with a warm hug. That night, I ate one of the most delicious traditional food of Indonesia, rendang.
In Tarutung, we spent our days chit-chatting, talking about how long we have been apart. We also went to the church and celebrated Christmas there. As I walked, the wind can’t stop blowing my face, I heard the song “Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle all the way,” everywhere. From different spots, I saw crowds of people selling this white, rounded cake called “kue putu”. We went there and bought some for our neighbours in Kerinci.
After several days in Tarutung, I and my family went to Dolok Sanggul, it took 3 hours of car drive from Tarutung. I saw people decorating their houses with Christmas trees. I also noticed that on our way to my grandfather’s house, I saw different sellers selling the same product which is the traditional food of Batak such as “kue lapet”. It is a small cake that is made from flour, grated coconut, and brown sugar. We bought some and ate the cake in the car. My parents had a lot of stories in this town. Both my father and my mom can’t stop rambling about how they spent their teenage years.
At my grandfather’s house, we gathered with our big family. Cheers are everywhere. However, sadly, I barely understand anything since most of the time my family is speaking in Bataknese.
Long story short, I and my family finally went back to Kerinci. From that moment, I realized that happiness is not all about how much money we had, but the moment which creates the happiness itself. Meeting my family might seems cliché and boring, but the memories I spent there, will always be special in my heart.
A diary entry written by Mikhaella Anastasia
Dear diary,
On that bright Tuesday morning, I, Chen, Marie and Clay were on our way to school. While walking, we talked and chit-chatted about our school life. As the wind blows, I saw a small, dark red with dotted pattern spiders crawling up towards a mango tree. The spider looks old. I have never seen a spider like that before.
I told my friends about the spider I saw, but none of them have seen that type of spider before as well. We stared at the spider for minutes, yet nothing happened. We were all amazed by the beauty of the spider. Red eyes, red body with polka dot pattern. It was fascinating. When Chen gets closer to the spider and tried to approach it, I stopped him. By the time I touched his shoulder, Chen startled. He told me that he loves spiders and decided to bring that small spider home. Of course I don't want that to happen, so, I refused and convinced him to just leave the spider.
I checked my phone and realized that were almost late, so we ran to our way to school. The only class we need to attend that day is biology class. In the biology class, we started a new chapter, which is about 'the living creature'. In this chapter, we learned about different types of animals, including the spider. As soon as we realized that the picture of spider we saw on our textbook was the same as what we saw before, we were shocked. Ms. Kelly - our biology teacher told the class that the spider that was in the textbook was considered as one of the most poisonous spiders in the world. She explained that once someone touches that type of spider, his/her skin might get irritated and needed medication from the professionals as soon as possible.
During the lunch break, I ran to my friend's table and told them about how lucky we were. I'm so proud of myself because I saved Chen from that red spider we saw.
-An interview-
Interviewer: Mikhaella Anastasia, Highschool student
Interviewee: Martha Lena, College student
Mikhaella: Good evening Martha. It is a pleasure to have you on this interview today. My name is Mikhaella Anastasia and today I would like to ask a few questions for you.
Martha: Good evening Mikhaella, I am very grateful to be invited.in your interview
Mikhaella: Thank you Martha. Before we start our interview, I would ask for your permission to write all of your responses and to publish the result of this interview for our English assignment.
Martha: It’s totally fine.
Mikhaella: Thank you Martha. Let us get started then. So, Martha can you please tell me a bit about your background studies and activities?
Martha: Of course, my status now is being a college student at the faculty of economic and business Airlangga University. For my activities, I usually spend my time working as the student ambassador and also being one of the members in a student’s organization. Right now, I am currently working in the division public relation at WEBS that stands for workshop entrepreneur business society.
Mikhaella: You played such a big role as a college student, why do you think it is important?
Martha: I believe that doing activities outside the campus and joining organization is really important because it helps me to develop skills such as communication skill, leadership, public speaking, teamwork, and time management skill.
Mikhaella: As a college student there must be struggles you face in order to manage all of your schedule. So how do you usually manage all of those tasks?
Martha: Since I was small, my parents always taught me about being a hard worker and discipline. Until now, I always try my best to implement those two things on my life. As a student, I always make sure that I am capable of doing all of the tasks without disturbing my college study. I usually organize myself by writing a planner. In the planner, I write all of the things I need to do based on the priority orders. Every week, I set my goals correctly so that I have a clear vision of what to do. In order to accomplish all of the works, I set a time to each activity so that I could stay productive.
Mikhaella: From your experience, is there any troubles you face while setting off your goals?
Martha: As a human, sometimes the reality doesn’t go with the plan. There are times where I miss something. For example, when I am sick or there are urgent events that I need to attend. I believe that doing mistakes is normal. So, what I usually would like to do is to do self-reflection and evaluation. Every time I make a new mistake, I would like to find out the root problems first. For example, if the reason I could not finish my task of the week is because I am sick, it is obvious that it probably happens because of my unhealthy lifestyle. After figuring out the root problems, I will find out the solution for myself so that I would not do the same mistake. In this case, I will improve my sleeping schedule, eat healthier meals, and lastly exercise regularly.
Mikhaella: I heard that you were planning to do an internship. Is this true and, if yes, can you please explain how does it benefit you?
Martha: Yes, it is. I decided to apply on an internship to fill up my time at home. I do realize that during this pandemic, I have much more time. So, I think registering myself for an internship would be an excellent idea. By doing internship, I would not spend my time on unnecessary activities anymore. Plus, by doing this, I could experience a real working environment experience.
Mikhaella: Other than doing internships, are there any activities you would like to do during your semester break?
Martha: Other than doing internship, I would like to spend my semester break to read more books and journaling.
Mikhaella: Alright, that is all for today. Thank you so much for attending the interview today Martha.
Martha: You’re welcome.
Thank you!
