Flipped Classroom Rationale
I created an instructional video to teach a mathematical concept. The idea of flipped learning is that students can watch a video outside of the classroom and get a basic understanding of the concept being taught. The student can watch the video at any time after school. The student can stop or start the video and watch the video at their own pace. They can rewind the video if they missed something or they may want to watch the video more than once. When students come to the classroom the next day, they can work on getting a deeper understanding of the material through meaningful activities designed to promote a deeper understanding of the concept. By developing a quiz in Google Forms it provides feedback of their understanding of the material and gives me an idea of the effectiveness of my video.
Performance indicator 5-I states that a competent teacher “uses multiple teaching strategies, including adjusted pacing and flexible grouping, to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical and creative thinking, problem solving and performance capabilities.” When students watch the instructional lesson at home, at their own pace, the in-class time can facilitate more conversation during class and increase engagement not only between the teacher and the student, but also more engagement with their peers whether through meaningful group work or various learning activities. Performance indicator 5-N states that a competent teacher “uses technology to accomplish differentiated instructional objectives that enhance learning for each student.” This was accomplished by using several different technological tools such as screencast and google forms to produce the video and the quiz. It also gives additional time in the classroom that is used to further their learning.
Creating the short instructional video helped me grow as a future educator. In my future classroom, I can incorporate many different technologies to keep students engaged while learning. I learned that a flipped classroom allowed our students to learn in different ways and provided more time for classroom discussions and activities that can provide deeper understanding of the material being taught. I can see that teaching is an important job and as future educators we must do whatever we can to help our students learn to their fullest potential. While flipped classroom is a great idea, I would use a variety of teaching strategies in my future classroom.
