Back in 2003, I sat down and wrote out a list of my 100 favourite films, partly because I had nothing better to do, but more importantly because I had been so disappointed by the Sight and Sound 2002 Ten Best Films Of All Time poll. I wanted to react against it, but what would I put in its place? It felt like it was time to take stock, to see where my own tastes had got to, now I'd turned thirty. I decided to only feature one film per director, to give the list more richness and variety, and so I didn't find myself in the ridiculous position of choosing whether to have six Hitchcock/Ozu/Dreyer films or seven. I've revised the list every year since, as my tastes change or I discover something new. The list is presented in no particular order, and as of January 2026, I've added my next 350 favourite films for bonus interest.
