Trying to sound like a native speaker in your target language? Maybe native speakers correct your pronunciation, and you just can't figure out what you are saying wrong. Phonetics is the science behind pronunciation and how we perceive it, and it can totally change the language learning game.
Or maybe you are just trying to pass an obligatory language class without feeling embarrassed every time you have a speaking exam or have to do a presentation. Phonetics can help with that too.
Linguists need each other's expertise. Maybe you're a translator, grammar professor, field linguist doing survey work, or you're working on your dissertation on the TAM system in a minority language in Central Africa. Whatever the case, maybe phonetics has come up and you need a second opinion or a refresher. Let me offer my expertise.
You also may be a student in an introductory linguistics class or a phonetics class. Or maybe you are in an upper-level undergrad or master's course and need a refresher because it's been way too many late-night procrastinated papers since you took your phonetics class. I can help with that too.
I have studied Spanish at university and several others on my own time. And phonetics has always been integral in my language learning journey, so you can trust that I will be able to understand where you are coming from as a language learner.
I have been explaining phonetics to singers, language learners, and linguistics students for at least seven years. I have taken courses in acoustics, articulatory phonetics, anatomy and physiology of the voice, and the phonologies of English, Spanish, Italian, French, and German. I keep reading peer-reviewed articles on phonetics to improve as a professional.
I have helped beginner language learners who wanted to learn the orthography and phonology of:
Spanish, French, Hebrew, Korean, Bengali, Russian, German, Turkish, and others
I have tutored my peers in both undergrad and graduate school.
Always feel free to ask me about other languages. I love to learn the orthography and phonology of other languages so you don't have to. Since I teach accent reduction, I have lots of experience in narrow transcriptions.
Just like tutoring for any other subject, I don't do your homework for you. My goal is to help you to understand the material and improve your grades in linguistics classes. I love it when my linguist peers ask for my opinion on a transcription. And although I may be the phonetics guy, I love to discuss phonology if you ever need someone to bounce ideas off of for your project.
I will tutor you as often as you need and I am available. Check out my hours on the contact page, but feel free to ask about tutoring outside of my normal workday if you really need it.
