Students will be expected to write a 5-7 page essay examining the differences between Tupaj Katari and Tupac Amaru’s revolutionary movements. Emphasis will be placed on the social position of the rebellions’ leaders and an examination of the stated goals of the movement. Special attention will be paid to both movements regular appeals to the King of Spain as the one who would deliver them from the injustices of the colonial authority.

Choose one revolutionary leader mentioned in this unit or in your reading that you found most interesting. Suggested revolutionary leaders include: Father Hidalgo, Father Morales, Vicente Guerrero, General Agustin de Iturbide, Simon Bolivar, Jose De San Martin, or Toussaint L'ouverture. After researching the leader’s life and accomplishments, write an approximately 4 page biographical sketch, making sure to include the leader’s background, ideological influences/ motivations, vocation prior to becoming a revolutionary leader, and actions taken toward revolution. Summarize his leadership, successes and failures, and lasting impact or legacy.

Choose one of the Spanish Viceroyalties (New Spain, Peru, New Granada, and Rio de la Plata), or Brazil, to research. Create a presentation to show the stages it went through to gain independence. Include who the key players were and what transpired, including significant battles (in cases other than Brazil). Explain what nation(s) were created after the revolution (except in Brazil), and what type of governments were set up in each new nation. If researching Brazil, cover through the departure of Pedro II, when Brazil became a republic. Add any interesting facts or stories you discovered. Requirements: electronic slide presentation of 10-15 slides or an approximately 4 page paper. Include a works cited page.
