At home (Outside)

Cloud Watching

(1) Find a comfortable and safe spot to lie down outside. You could bring an old blanket or even an extra jacket to lie on.
(2) Look up at the sky and search for clouds.
(3) What kinds of shapes can you see in the clouds?
(4) VARIATIONS: (a) Once you find a shape in the clouds, tell a story about that shape! How did it get in the sky? Does it have a name? You can share the story with a friend or an adult, or write it down for yourself! (b) Repeat this exercise once a day for a week. After each time, draw a little sketch of the shape of the clouds. After the end of a week, see how many different kinds of clouds you saw. Can you find all of the clouds on this list: https://scijinks.gov/clouds/ ?

Multi-species Marathon

(1) Measure a certain distance on your sidewalk, driveway, or stoop. You can use centimeters, inches, feet, whatever you'd like!
(2) Using a timer or your own counting, see how long it takes you to run that distance. It helps to have a friend, brother, sister, or adult time you!
(3) Think of three animals who live in your area.
(4) Using an encyclopedia or the Internet, figure out how quickly each of those animals moves.
(5) Using your math skills (and maybe the math skills of an adult), figure out how long it would take for each of those three animals to run the same distance. Which one of you would win in a race?

Shelter Building

(1) Find a safe place to play in a wooded area.
(2) Find sticks of all shapes and sizes.
(3) Using the sticks and logs, try to build a shelter for yourself. How big can you make it? Can you make it waterproof?
(4) VARIATION: (a) Using smaller twigs and bits of nature, like acorns and bits of moss, build a playground for fairies!
