When you belong to Information Processing Laboratory, you can use PCs and desks for your own work. If you need it, one more PC (or user account for servers) will be given to you. Information Processing Lab. mainly consists of two research groups, i.e. Tsuruoka-group and Kawanaka-group, depending on your research interests, but there is no wall between them.
The laboratory has not only student room but also rooms for seminar/meetings. These room are can be used for lab seminar and small meetings for each research group, also for students' works. Lab members sometimes have English classes by themselves to improve their English skills. Of course, we have small room for break and you can have lunch (or coffee break) in the room.

Faculty staffs and students all are pretty friendly and there is no problem on human relationship. Basically, all students should be in the office from 10am to 4pm, but this is not a strong constraint. Their research project should be kept on their own schedule because all students have to attend domestic/international conferences every year.
Please see the top page of this website.
In the laboratory, developing a computer/information systems is the main work and to do this, the enough skill of computer programming will be required. If you do not have such skills so far, it's not a big problem. Our lab has some training programs to learn Computer Science including Computer Programming, Machine Learning, Image Processing and so on. If you >>>STRONGLY DO NOT LIKE<<< Computer Programming, or do not have motivation about Computer Science, then you should reconsider to change your plan.
Please visit Annual Schedule.
Exactly, it's pretty important for us to have experiences of computer programming. If you have enough time to join, you had better make many computer programs, of course, simple one is OK at the first step of programming. This experience and obtained know-hows during this process will be a great experiences for you.
We have three research progress meetings for undergraduate students. In the weekly meeting, all graduate/undergraduate students have to attend the meeting and show their research progress. Also, all undergraduate students have to take a class for "Technical English for Electrical and Electronic Engineering" and give an English presentation. In the presentation, they have to show their research topics and progress. This is the final exam of the class, and it is usually held on December every year.
The most important skills are as follows;
1. Programming Sense
Absolutely required because programming is basics and main work in the lab.
2. Problem-solving Skills
In the lab. his/her own research project is assigned to each student. Your project will not progress if you do nothing.
3. Wide Vision like Eagle and Interests
In many cases, good idea makes the project progress drastically.
4. Communication Skills
Communicating with other colleagues is very important to progress your research project.
What you should do depends on the given research projects because Information Processing Laboratory has various research projects, e.g. Image Processing, Natural Language Processing, Human Action Recognition and so on. Every projects requires four elements, i.e. "Investigation", "Proposal of Method(s)", "Evaluation Experiments" and "Discussion (Analysis)". In the investigation stage, you will read many literatures on your projects and then, you will propose your own method and make computer programs with C/C++/Java/Python (or other languages?) to evaluate your method. So we can say that computer programming is very important to progress your project. Of course, another skills (English reading/writing, presentation etc.) are also important.
Yes, you have enough time for job hunting. After this, you should concentrate to your research project.
You do NOT need to worry about this. Many graduate/undergraduate students are graduated from Information Processing Laboratory and they all are now working for famous companies in Japan like TOYOTA, MAZDA, DENSO, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi and so on. Your job hunting will not depend on your research project.
