Julian Boilen's map of New York City features photos the city took of most buildings across the 5 boroughs between 1939 and 1941. The photos were eventually digitized and Julian plotted them on a map so that we could all explore them. The 1940s.NYC website is a labor of love, a gift from one passionate New Yorker to all of us.
In addition to exploring what our neighborhood looked like in the 1940's, you can also add a story about the building to the photo. This special feature now allows us to share our memories, moments, and reflections with each other.
Many thanks to our neighbors that have already added stories on the 1940s.NYC map.

We are more than neighbors, together we are a community.
MG: Childhood home
My family lived here from 1994 through 2022. It was the best place to grow up. The neighborhood, the people, the house; I have very fond memories of this house and community.
We moved into our home just before the COVID-19 pandemic and have loved getting to know our neighbors, the wider community, and the rich history of the Fiske Terrace–Midwood Park Historic District. During the pandemic, we began putting up messages of encouragement on the corner of our fence at Foster Avenue and East 18th Street, a tradition we’ve happily continued. We’ve also planted tulips and other flowers along the grass verge by the sidewalk. Going big with Halloween decorations and candy has become our most fun—and most enthusiastic—new tradition 🙂.
At one point, our home featured a porch that wrapped around the front and side of the house. It was later enclosed and used as a dentist’s office. Every once in a while a former dentist patient stops by to show a friend where they used to get their teeth cleaned. In-home dentist and general physician private practices were common in this neighborhood many years ago. If you walk around, you'll still see some signs advertising them in yards.
The owners before us removed the remaining dental equipment from the basement and completed several infrastructure improvements. Many original details remain through out the house, including beautiful stained-glass windows and original woodwork.
