This app is a Locale plugin that allows to interact with MIDI devices, either USB or BLE.

The app does not work on its own. It is a client app and it requires a host to be installed on the device as well.

By exploiting the power of one of the previously listed host apps, you can make your musical instrument automatically play a song without you touching it, you can make it play a sound when you play your favourite piece correctly, you can use it to turn on the lights in your room before a practicing session or to make your phone read notifications aloud when you hit the sustain pedal. You can create a custom MIDI control pad and use it when connected to your musical instrument to bring your musical compositions to a whole new level.

Using this app you can also transform an old phone into a BLE transmitter, in order to add wireless capability to a USB only MIDI device. This feature is experimental and currently works within this app only, but universal support will be added in a future update.

Examples

For these examples I am using a virtual device on my PC. The real fun comes when you use a real musical instrument! The host app in the videos is Tasker, but the procedures are similar on other apps as well.

Configure your phone for MIDI

This should only be done once and only if you are using a USB connection. Do the procedure while your phone is unplugged, otherwise the new default setting may not be saved.

In this case I am connecting to a virtual device on my PC. The real fun comes when you use a physical instrument!

Press the damper pedal to flash the time

Losing track of time during practicing sessions? Just press the damper pedal and let your phone tell announce you the time.

Play some notes to launch an app

Quickly launch your favorite app by playing a sequence of predefined notes. Close the app by pressing another note.

Release a low note to maximize media volume

Maximize media volume when releasing a note lower than a certain predefined one.

Toggle Do Not Disturb with the pitch wheel

Turn the pitch wheel over a certain threshold to enable Do Not Disturb mode. Turn it back down to enable notifications again.

Play some notes on your instrument when opening an app

You can easily get notified by your instrument when something happens on your phone.

Transmission (beta)

Follow this step to enable the transmission feature, turning your USB device into a BLE one.

This feature is experimental and currently works within this app only, but universal support will be added in a future update.

Enabling transmission

First connect to a USB device, then enable transmission as shown in the video. Connect to the transmitter from another phone following the same procedure you did for a normal device, but this time select "Transmitter" as device type.

Control pad

You can design your own control pad and add every function you need.

A very simple pad

This pad was entirely created in Tasker (you can of course do way better than this!). The app supports the usage of variables when sending MIDI messages, so you can implement your own custom logic to create messages that fulfill any requirement.

A useful tip

When sending and receiving MIDI messages, order matters! For example, "Note On, Note Off, Note On, Note Off" is not the same as "Note On, Note On, Note Off, Note Off", even if at high speed it may sound identical. For a better recognition accuracy, it is better to play "staccato".
