Note The product key in the firmware activates only the operating system that is included together with the device. If a different operating system is installed, you must indicate the current product to activate it. For example, if the device is running on Windows 10 Home, you can restore or install only Windows 10 Home by using the available product key. Although you can install another system, such as Windows 8.1, you must supply a valid product key for that system to be able to activate it.

Surface Pro devices are optimized for 64-bit versions of the operating system. On these devices, 32-bit versions of Windows are unsupported. If a 32-bit version of the operating system is installed, it may not start correctly. This may occur if you try to start from external media, such as an attached USB or DVD drive. This may also occur if you try to start to an image that was applied to the local disk.

Microsoft Surface is a series of touchscreen-based personal computers, tablets, and interactive whiteboards designed and developed by Microsoft, most of them running the Windows operating system. They are designed to be premium devices that set examples for manufacturers of other Windows-compatible products.[2][3][4] It comprises several generations of hybrid tablets, 2-in-1 detachable notebooks, a convertible desktop all-in-one, an interactive whiteboard, and various accessories, many with unique form factors.[5][6] The majority of devices in the Surface lineup are based on Intel processors and compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Microsoft first announced Surface at an event on June 18, 2012, presented by former CEO Steve Ballmer in Milk Studios Los Angeles. Surface was the first major initiative by Microsoft to integrate its Windows operating system with its own hardware, and is the first PC designed and distributed solely by Microsoft.[17] Panos Panay was the general manager of the team that developed the Surface.[18]

On May 3, 2017, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop, a non-detachable version of the Surface Book claiming to have the thinnest touch-enabled LCD panel of its kind.[61] Its permanently attached hardware keyboard comes in four colors and uses the same kind of fabric as the Type Cover accessories for the tablets. The device comes with the newly announced Windows 10 S operating system, which enables faster boot times at the expense of the ability to download and install programs from the web instead of the Microsoft Store. Users can switch to a fully enabled version of Windows 10 for free.[61]

On January 21, 2015, Microsoft introduced a new device category under the Surface family: the Surface Hub. It is an 84-inch 120 Hz 4K or 55-inch 1080p multi-touch, multi-pen, wall-mounted all-in-one device, aimed for collaboration and videoconferencing use of businesses. The device runs a variant of the Windows 10 operating system.[64]

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), whose products have traditionally run Microsoft operating systems, have had positive responses to the release of Surface.[149] HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Dell[150] applauded Microsoft's decision to create its own Tablet PC and said that relationships with Microsoft have not changed. John Solomon, senior vice president of HP, said that "Microsoft was basically making a leadership statement and showing what's possible in the tablet space".[151][152] Acer founder Stan Shih said that he believed Microsoft only introduced its own hardware in order to establish the market and would then withdraw in favor of its OEMs.[153]

The poor sales of the ARM-based Surface tablet had been credited to the continuing market dominance of Microsoft's competitors in the tablet market. Particularly, Apple's iPad retained its dominance due its App store offering the most tablet-optimized applications. Most OEMs opted to produce tablets running Google Android, which came in a wide variety of sizes and prices (albeit with mixed success among most OEMs), and Google Play had the second-largest selection of tablet applications. By contrast there was a limited amount of software designed specifically for Surface's operating system, Windows RT, the selection which was even weaker than Windows Phone.[171] Indeed, OEMs reported that most customers felt Intel-based tablets were more appropriate for use in business environments, as they were compatible with the much more widely available x86 programs while Windows RT was not. Microsoft's subsequent efforts have been focused upon refining the Surface Pro and making it a viable competitor in the premium ultra-mobile PC category, against other Ultrabooks and the MacBook Air, while discontinuing development of ARM-powered Surface devices as the Surface 3 (non-Pro) had an Intel x86 CPU (albeit with lower performance than the Surface Pro 3).[171][172]

I bought the surface go 1st gen with the expectation that it was more of a tablet than its bigger brother, the surface pro (My fault I know). Unfortunately it isn't. Windows 10 is horrendous, both in S and the standard mode. The surface go doesnt even handle the simplest tasks without lag, such as reading pdfs, which is my primary use for it. It's useable but it's definitely not what I expected for the price I paid. I'm hoping that windows 10x will fix this problem but until then, is there any operating system that is lighter on the surface go's limited resources?

I was recently given a Microsoft Surface RT running the Arm processor. Given that there is no longer support for Windows 8.1 nor access to the Microsoft Store on it, I am looking for information on an alternative operating system that will allow me to use this device.

we've had android and linux working on both the surface 1 and 2 arm32 bit for some time now, we've exploited the uefi firmware to launch u-boot, check out our discord for further details -rt-710026735294349322

Students and exam-takers downloading the test-taking software, Examplify, should review these Minimum System Requirements (MSRs) to ensure their devices are supported. Examplify works with most modern computers, both Mac and Windows operating systems. To keep Examplify current in the rapidly evolving market, when new technology is introduced, Examplify works hard to timely implement updates that accommodate changes in technologies. It is not always possible, however, to support all hardware or software, unless and until we test and certify updated technologies, including chipsets and operating systems.

Since those early days, technological advances in battery life, display resolution, handwriting recognition software, memory and wireless internet access have made tablets a viable computing option. Today, consumers and businesses have a range of tablet devices and operating systems to choose from. Collectively, tablets have made numerous technological advances and gained increasing popularity in enterprise BYOD environments.

Windows 7 is the University's current operating system. Faculty and staff who opt to purchase desktop and/or laptop models which require the use of Windows 8 (or Surface Pro; see below) should note that such models will have limited support as described in the "Self-supported PC" section.

Windows RT is a variant of the Windows operating system designed to run only on Surface RTs. Windows RT will not run software written for traditional Windows versions. Although Windows RT is cosmetically similar to Windows 8, software written for one is incompatible with the other.

Xactimate and other Verisk estimating products are not supported on Mac OS. The products work with the Windows operating systems, listed below. We do support machines with an Intel chipset using a dual boot configuration as long as only one operating system is running at a given time, and as long as that operating system is supported. Machines using Apple silicon are not supported.

It's a tablet that runs a full version of the latest Microsoft Windows operating system. It has a touch screen that takes advantage of Windows' new tile-based interface and can run the new touch-centric Windows applications. And it also has a version of the traditional Windows desktop interface and can run all your old Windows programs.

The Windows operating system the Surface Pro runs gobbles up 35 to 40 gigabytes of the device's storage space, so you have considerably less room than you might think to store apps, documents or pictures. It also gives the Surface Pro far less usable space than other tablets with the same nominal storage capacity.

Since 2012, the Microsoft Surface PC line has been a wildly popular solution to computing. Users who want an alternative to Apple greatly appreciate Microsoft's user-friendly Windows operating system, and most of these touchscreen PCs integrate Microsoft's exclusive Intel processors. These personal computers are also more affordable than other types of laptops.

The Surface Laptop 5 is the overall best Surface PC available today. The device features a 12th-generation Intel Core i5 processor and runs on Microsoft 11 operating system.
