Every time I print to PDF in Edge (Windows 10), it crashes Edge. This started about 1 month ago it must have been a patch. My windows 10 version - Version 20H2(OS Build 1904.1766). So, now I am using Chrome as my default browser, till this gets fixed.

Ok I updated windows 10 to Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044,1766). rebooted twice just in case. No, go edge the same thing print, printer Adobe PDF, press print, shows the folder to save and then EDGE crashes. Tried MS print to PDF, but that crashed sooner. Does not crash if you send it to the printer.

I am experiencing the same problem.

Whenever I try to print using MS Print to PDF, the closes the printing dialog window but the save dialog never appears. The Edge keeps emitting error sound to all my clicks.

It also seems that it keep opening new instances, because the only method or closing the Edge after that is using task manager, and it shows a large number after the Microsoft Edge name (50+ normally).

Sometimes, I also have to restart Microsoft Explorer.

I am also experiencing this kind of problem when I try to choose a file to upload - the open dialog box never appears also. I seems to me to be a communication problem between Edge and Windows API.

In the EDGE browser, select print; for the printer, select ADBE PDF; file explorer opens to save the file, then you save the file (at this point, it would just bring down the window, and you were unable to save the file). Now I can save the file--GREATE!!! thank you to whoever fixed it.

Microsoft Print to PDF or any other third-party Print to PDF printers are not working for us. It looks like this is related to a bug in one of the latest security updates for Windows.

Have anybody found a solution or workaround?

Thanks!

I have already tried the troubleshooting tool but it didn't fix the problem. It just makes me select the printer as the default printer and doesn't detect any other problems. I have also tried the following:

Enter server: When I uploaded my application and tried running it on my server, I get an error saying there's no printer installed. I check in Printers and devices and behold, MPTP isn't listed on the server (one fix for my problem is setting MPTP to default printer).

The problem is I was googling "Windows 10 print to pdf". When I tried searching Server 2012 I found out that Print to PDF doesn't exist on Server 2012, which is why I couldn't find it.

If you have an environment with a hybrid setup of both Active Directory (AD) and Azure Active Directory (AAD), it is important to consider enabling the hybrid AD configuration for the connector. Some existing print management apps (e.g. secure print apps, print job reporting apps, etc.) rely on the user identity from on-prem AD being used to send a print job to the printer. These apps may not behave as expected if this option is not turned on. However, turning this option on when your environment does not meet the pre-requisites for it may result in print job failures. Please read this article which will help you decide whether turning on this option is the right choice for your environment.

As everyone else has said, Windows 7 didn't offer this option. We'll need to install something (a new version of Office or a third party app) to get this feature. Or, of course, if we really like Windows 10's print to PDF option, we could offer to upgrade them to 10.

If we really had Windows 7, it's more likely that either Adobe Acrobat (not Acrobat Reader) was installed or there was some third-party PDF creator installed at some point. One of the better free "print to PDF" utilities is CutePDF Writer:

We have a Windows Server 2019 instance that we use as a Remote Desktop server. Until today, people could print to PDF. Suddenly today the Print button Preferences button, and options are greyed out and cannot be clicked. Someone online suggested removing and reinstalling the Microsoft Print to PDF printer. I was able to remove it using Device Manager, but when I try to reinstall it (manually adding a printer, selecting PORTPROMPT: (Local Port) as the port, and the Microsoft Print to PDF driver), I get an error: "Unable to install printer. The handle is invalid." I uninstalled some recently installed updates (a newer version of KB4598230 and then KB4598230), but that didn't help. We also have OneNote installed on the computer and printing to that doesn't work either (same greyed out Print button). Regular physical printers do work. I can't find anything helpful online. SFC /ScanNow didn't find any issues.

Sorry that didn't help.

Here's a workaround suggested by one user From this thread:

"I found a place to delete the driver manually through help I was getting with a printer issue (I ran "printui.exe /s" then found the driver in the drivers list and removed it). When I got back to adding the "printer" manually, clicking the "Windows Update" button under the list brought it up this time. "

Thanks for the thought, but I just tried and it didn't help. First I told windows to delete the driver but safe the files (for the XPS printer), then I told windows to delete everything. When I run Windows Update on this Server the XPS and PDF drivers don't show up. I still see the XPS driver in the installed drivers, and when I select it, I get the same error messages. When I try to re-install the PDF printer, I don't see the drivers installed locally (Makes sense becuase I told windows to fully delete them), and Windows Update doesn't find them. Now I don't have drivers I can even try to re-install.

NOTE: our configuration is a little different. We are running windows server 2012 R2 (Now with all the latest updates) and Windows 10 1909 or windows 10 20h2 with all the latest updates.

We had removed the updates from the server in November to regain functionality. About 2 weeks ago an update installed to our windows 10 workstations that broke this again. After testing, I found that Remote pdf printing now works if both the servers and workstations are updated.

However, there was an error message displayed about the printer driver. I failed to get a screenshot, but it seems there was a large red 'X' icon and error message displaying in a stand-alone dialog, which may have been fired from the VFP demo app starting up.

I just took a look to see if there's a way to be smarter about what gets installed, but there are many problems with printer installation because no matter what you do there are dependencies. The Microsoft PDF Printer Driver is the first driver that comes in the box and can just work without further configuration which is why I decided to set this up as a the default.

Printer handling in Web Connection requires both a Printer Driver and wwPDF implementation (which is preset in code or specifically in wconnect.h). Changing that at install time is a pain. So changing from the defaul MS driver to a Post Script printer also requires switching to GhostScript or the Distiller PDF implementation.

For reference here are the configuration steps for the Microsoft PDF driver or the Generic Printer Driver that should work with PDF printer driver that supports direct file output (Nitro, FoxIt etc.).

I installed the PDFCreator printer driver and it prints a PDF without user interaction and it works quickly, which is all great. However, the output produced won't display in any viewer including in PDF Architect.

When I used the workaround by renaming the printer driver, the test page's PDF output was viewable on Chrome, MS Edge, Safari on PC and Mac, Android smartphones, Sony Smart TV, iPad and iPhone. The downloaded PDF is also readable with version 19 of Adobe Reader DC. So I am pretty happy with it.

Yes definitely - if you are printing tons of PDF content I would highly recommend XFRX because it produces PDF much quicker than the other solutions that are based on a printer driver in Windows. It also avoids race conditions of multiple Web Connection instances trying to print at the same time - the Windows Print Spooler is a single queue that can only process one print job at a time, so for busy apps producing PDF that's a problem.

If you're using wwPdf you can specify the name of the printer driver to use for PDF generation. If you're using something else, it too should support a printer driver, unless - like XFRX - it generates the PDF natively.

OK, now I'm able to see 'PDF Architect' in printer driver list. Rename it. Works as expected in desktop environment.I should use it in webserver applet (cgi) on Apache. Unfortunately in this case it do not works. My applet returns 'memory access violation" error when assign printerName.

I don't have no idea what PDF Architect is but it has to be a PDF driver that allows specifying a file name... Not all drivers support that. You should be able to directly print to that driver if it works - try it from FoxPro with a filename and see what happens.

I've been updating 1607 and 1703 Windows 10 versions to 1809 without issues but when i try to update 1709 to 1809 it fails. The C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\CompatData files show a couple of oem.inf files are blocking the upgrade. These drivers point to the Microsoft Print to PDF and Microsoft XPS Document Writer printers.

Does anyone know if there's a way in LabVIEW to utilize the "Microsoft Print to PDF" printer in an automatic way? I have XML files I want to print to PDF and I'd like to use the free Print to PDF printer in Windows 10, but I'd like to automatically specify the PDF path and also disable any user prompts.

This is an example going from a MS Word document to PDF (but would work for any MS program). This is an edited copy of the Print Report VI that comes with the Report Generation Toolkit. The only edit you need to make is to add an 'Output File Name' to the ActiveX invoke node (and set the printer name to 'Microsoft Print to PDF').

Just a bit further to my previous reply. An easier approach is to use the ActiveX invoke node 'ExportAsFixedFormat'. However, this gives a low-resolution PDF (not one I was happy with) hence why I started looking at the MS Print to PDF printer. 006ab0faaa
