Above all, Microsoft wants to improve the security of Windows by using only a few central IPP drivers instead of many different proprietary printer drivers from individual device manufacturers. Security holes in proprietary printer drivers often go unnoticed for years and thus remain in Windows. This makes Windows as a whole more vulnerable to attacks.

From 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide new proprietary printer drivers via Windows Update. However, Microsoft will continue to provide existing certified printer drivers via Windows Update after 2025. The printer manufacturers may also still update existing drivers.

I've been updating 1607 and 1703 Windows 10 versions to 1809 without issues but when i try to update 1709 to 1809 it fails. The C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\CompatData files show a couple of oem.inf files are blocking the upgrade. These drivers point to the Microsoft Print to PDF and Microsoft XPS Document Writer printers.

In the VDA environment users are producing printer driver errors stating that the 'print driver for "Print to PDF" and "Send to Microsoft OneNote 16 Driver" may not be used in conjunction with a non-inbox port monitor.'

I have been working on an issue for a small environment where we have 4 virtual servers running on VMware 6.5. We recently had to change our print drivers for a HP LaserJet Pro M402 from a Type3 version to Type 4 to be able to print forms properly from a SAP application. I made this change on a server setup as the network Print Server. The updated Type 4 drivers rolled out to all computers and servers without any issues. The only exception is a single Windows 2016 Server that is being used as a Remote Desktop Server (Terminal Server). I can install the HP Type 3 driver, but not the Type 4 driver.

Type 4 drivers are based on the XPS print system, and require double spooling for most printers. Once as the xps spool file, and then again as the pcl or postscript file that the printer actually uses. If you dont have the XPS stuff installed, they dont work.

According to Microsoft: Type 4 print drivers can be distributed via Windows Update or Windows Software UpdateServices (WSUS), but are not distributed to print clients from the print server. Apparently Printer OEM's don't actually distribute the drivers, but instead install a class driver that is supposed to add on the vendor specific features.

Type 4 drivers are required to print from Microsoft store apps, and in they are installed through the microsoft store, a whole other can of worms is introduced like the requirement for a microsoft account in addition to domain or local credentials.

Microsoft fixed the exploit, as a result, they were constantly changing the defaults for Windows Point and Print. The complication with Point and Print was, as a connection to a printer shared from a server with Type 3 drivers, the Print Driver (software) gets downloaded from the server onto the client machine.

Print Deploy can install a client, without admin access. The Mobility Print printer can be delivered to the client machines. With a few extra steps, Print Deploy can also deliver the vendor driver onto the client machine, for those end-users who need higher functionality options. You can also deliver that printer to specific groups, or your whole organization.

However, there was an error message displayed about the printer driver. I failed to get a screenshot, but it seems there was a large red 'X' icon and error message displaying in a stand-alone dialog, which may have been fired from the VFP demo app starting up.

I just took a look to see if there's a way to be smarter about what gets installed, but there are many problems with printer installation because no matter what you do there are dependencies. The Microsoft PDF Printer Driver is the first driver that comes in the box and can just work without further configuration which is why I decided to set this up as a the default.

Printer handling in Web Connection requires both a Printer Driver and wwPDF implementation (which is preset in code or specifically in wconnect.h). Changing that at install time is a pain. So changing from the defaul MS driver to a Post Script printer also requires switching to GhostScript or the Distiller PDF implementation.

For reference here are the configuration steps for the Microsoft PDF driver or the Generic Printer Driver that should work with PDF printer driver that supports direct file output (Nitro, FoxIt etc.).

I installed the PDFCreator printer driver and it prints a PDF without user interaction and it works quickly, which is all great. However, the output produced won't display in any viewer including in PDF Architect.

When I used the workaround by renaming the printer driver, the test page's PDF output was viewable on Chrome, MS Edge, Safari on PC and Mac, Android smartphones, Sony Smart TV, iPad and iPhone. The downloaded PDF is also readable with version 19 of Adobe Reader DC. So I am pretty happy with it.

Yes definitely - if you are printing tons of PDF content I would highly recommend XFRX because it produces PDF much quicker than the other solutions that are based on a printer driver in Windows. It also avoids race conditions of multiple Web Connection instances trying to print at the same time - the Windows Print Spooler is a single queue that can only process one print job at a time, so for busy apps producing PDF that's a problem.

If you're using wwPdf you can specify the name of the printer driver to use for PDF generation. If you're using something else, it too should support a printer driver, unless - like XFRX - it generates the PDF natively.

OK, now I'm able to see 'PDF Architect' in printer driver list. Rename it. Works as expected in desktop environment.I should use it in webserver applet (cgi) on Apache. Unfortunately in this case it do not works. My applet returns 'memory access violation" error when assign printerName.

I don't have no idea what PDF Architect is but it has to be a PDF driver that allows specifying a file name... Not all drivers support that. You should be able to directly print to that driver if it works - try it from FoxPro with a filename and see what happens.

Missing provider information generally points to an incorrect driver installation (possibly an updated driver). Some vendors may intentionally leave this field blank. If Citrix print driver replication is used, the blank field is ported to all servers.

In general, all of the Microsoft-supplied printer drivers are tested with Terminal Services and guaranteed to work with Citrix. However, before using a third-party printer driver, ensure it has been certified for Terminal Services. There is a Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) program for getting third-party printer drivers certified on Terminal Services. Citrix does not certify printer drivers. Consult your printer driver vendor to ensure the driver you plan to use has been certified for a Terminal Services environment.

Starting with Windows Server 2012 / Windows 8, Microsoft introduced a new driver model for the printing subsystem called V4 class drivers (V4 print driver). In this post we take at V4 print drivers and what the differences between V3 and V4 drivers are.

Over the years, the driver database constantly grew larger. You can see this if you try to install a printer driver using the Windows update. It takes minutes until you get the updated list. This list also contains many legacy drivers of devices which are not in use anymore.

V4 print drivers are based on the XPS printing path. Printers that can handle XPS directly do not require any additional rendering filters. For all other print devices, the XPS format needs to be converted into their language like PostScript or PCL.

A major limitation is that a Type 4 printer driver cannot be connected to third-party print monitors (ports). Keep this in mind when using an application requiring special printer ports, for example accounting or pull printing solutions.

Since Windows 10 21H2, Microsoft has baked Mopria support into the flagship operating system, with support for devices connected via the network or USB, thanks to the Microsoft IPP Class driver. Microsoft said: "This removes the need for print device manufacturers to provide their own installers, drivers, utilities, and so on."

To be clear, the end of servicing applies to drivers provided via Windows Update. Manufacturers will, according to Microsoft, "need to provide customers with an alternative means to download and install those printer drivers." Legacy v3 and v4 Windows printer drivers are facing the end of servicing ax.

Printing and Windows have long been uneasy bedfellows. While Microsoft hopes the end-of-servicing will take away some legacy driver headaches, there are plenty of other components within the Windows printing subsystem that can occasionally topple when poked the wrong way by a patch.

The driver is hosted on a print server, and pushed out via group policy. We instantiate it with the generically named driver entry (the one that does not include the version number in the name) because that way we can just replace the driver in place on the print server and all the workstations get the latest driver on the next group policy refresh.

I am having same problem now on our machines since update. Microsoft has been hammering this office app and website. It's crazy, now when we print pdf's it opens office.com website. I'm not changing drivers that I have been using for 5 years, hate global driver. Anyone find real solution to this?

I tested this on multiple Windows 10 computers running the latest version of Excel (365 subscription) with both Bluebeam PDF and Microsoft XPS Document writer set as the default printer and get the same result. However, I can't consistently create it. When I use a macro-enabled Excel files that has some page setup and other formatting code the task manager shows Microsoft Excel (32 bit) and "Print driver host for applications" open and Excel tends to lock up or say not responding. I never get the "has stopped working" error and eventually (meaning several minutes) Excel will come back. Even if I have multiple Excel files open it will just show these two lines under Microsoft Excel (32 bit): 006ab0faaa
