Your access to Microsoft 365 Apps will continue for a short period of time after you leave the university. When you are no longer eligible, you will still be able to access and print your files. You will not be able to install new instances of Microsoft 365 Apps and you will not be able to create/save/edit files.

Microsoft Teams is a "virtual office" and provides a complete communication collaboration system for instant messaging, conference calls, video meetings, desktop screen sharing, and file collaboration available to all active students, faculty, and staff.

Microsoft Office is a collection of software programs commonly used in an office environment. It is available on both Windows and Mac and includes programs, servers, services, and solutions for various business purposes.

We are providing a license to access Office 365 to registered students, faculty and staff for FREE. This cloud-based software ensures access to university Email as well as the latest version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more. Save and access your files from any internet enabled device using OneDrive.

Your Office 365 Education account will be terminated the same time as your NetID. The account termination guidelines for the NetID accounts can be found on our Access, Accounts and Password Guidelines page. At the time of account deletion, all data and information stored in the cloud service will no longer be accessible or recoverable.

Faculty and staff are reminded to review Policy #860 Information Security before storing data in cloud services, including any Office 365 Education product. Office 365 Education may be used only for materials and information that are not Confidential, and not covered by HIPAA, FERPA, PHI or other similar regulations. Eligibility to download Microsoft Office on Columbia-owned devices is generally limited to University officers, support staff, faculty and specific graduate/professional students at CUIMC and CBS.

The Help Desk can assist with authentication issues. In other words, the process of verifying that you are a university employee or student, enabling you to access your free subscription. The Help Desk does not support or repair personal devices, and since Microsoft Office 365 is for use on personal devices, the Help Desk is unable to assist with issues related to personal devices. If you do experience an issue with your Microsoft Office 365 subscription, it is recommended that you contact the Help Desk to determine if they can help. If the issue is not related to authentication, you may want to contact the vendor you purchased your device from for further assistance.
