Identificaiton and biocontrol of phytopathogens
Every year the Bangladeshi farmers suffer a huge loss to their crops caused by bacterial diseases which affect a wide variety of plants and make significant damage to the economy. It is important to identity these bacterial pathogens and assess their pathogenesis so that proper measures can be taken for disease management. A detailed understanding of pathogens in the native plants will help devising a more effective management strategy against the microbes.
Furthermore, currently our farmers use only chemical disinfectants for the control and management of microbial infections. These chemicals are effective to kill pathogens but greatly harm our ecosystem. We attempt finding out microbial antagonists to kill the phytopathogens to mitigate the infections and reduce use of the chemical disinfectants at the same time.
Present status: Preliminary stage.
Lack of the maintenance of proper hygiene in food processing, handling etc. is a major cause of gastroenteritis and other foodborne illness that result from infection of pathogenic microbes. Food products particularly those of animal origin, e.g., fish and broiler meats, serve as the main reservoir and vehicles for transmission of these pathogens. Worldwide, the pathogenic bacteria and fungi pose a major threat to human health causing mild to severe health conditions. Moreover, emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance among the pathogens have made the treatment even more challenging. In order to understand the risk of microbial pathogenesis in local food products, we are working to determine the prevalence, pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance phenotypes of food-borne pathogenic organisms concerning public health. Basically, this project is focused on the one health issues including foodborne zoonotic infections and diseases, the associated multidrug resistant strains including Staphylococci, Salmonella and Shigella, and other food-associated microbes.
