Suzhou Language and Culture

Suzhou 苏州 is my hometown. It is a beautiful city of rich culture with many rivers and lakes and with about 2500 years of history. Preserving and promoting its culture is both a hobby and a responsibility for many of us from this city.

• Suzhounese 苏州(sou-tseu)闲(yeah)话(wu): Suzhounese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin or Cantonese. Suzhounese is mutually intelligible with some other Wu languages such as Shanghainese. The number of speakers of Suzhounese is declining drastically. 

• Suzhou Classical Gardens: 沧浪亭，网师园，狮子林，拙政园，留园, etc.

• Suzhou High School: "Millennium Prefecture School, Centennial Suzhou High School." Fan Zhongyan founded the predecessor of the school Suzhou Prefecture School in 1035. Some of the famous alumni include Chien-Shiung Wu and Nobel Physics Prize Winner Tsung-Dao Lee.

• Arts: Kunqu (Kun Opera, 昆曲), Suzhou Pingtan (评弹), Su Xiu (Su Embroidery, 苏绣)

• Women Physcists: Chien-Shiung Wu, Zehui He, Ming-Chen Wang 

• Food: 大闸蟹, 松鼠鳜鱼, 响油鳝糊, 苏式月饼(肉月饼), 奥灶面, 三虾面, 水八仙(鸡头米), 苏式绿豆汤, etc.
