Wanna go backpacking in Europe? Want to experience the hidden beaches in Southeast Asia? If your dream is to explore the world while you're young, you're gonna need to start saving up. I'm Michelle Marquez, accounting student and an expert in money-saving. Let me share with you some tips on growing your travel fund.
Plan your meals and drinks
Eating out costs you more money than when you plan your meals for the whole week. Making the grocery list and spending hours cooking can take a lot of time and effort but you'll be surprised at the amount of money you'll be saving. When it comes to coffee cravings, you need to be your own barista for a few months if the goal is to save. Bring your own coffee mix or beans to the office for your midday cup. You can also cut back on soda and other sweet drinks while you're at it.
Automatically transfer a portion of your salary to your savings account
Setting aside 10 to 20 percent of your income will significantly grow your travel fund. If possible, open another account just for this so that you won't be tempted to use the money when you see something you want to buy. You can also automatically transfer the amount to your savings so that you won't feel the dent in your finances.
Find ways to generate extra income
When I was in high school, I was also known as Michelle Marquez the neighborhood's babysitter. I took on the job because I wanted to save for an overseas trip. Some of my friends chose to sell their art or their old stuff for extra money. I also knew people who baked cookies to raise funds. Take advantage of these opportunities to build up your travel savings.
If your dream is to see the world, you can actually make it happen. It might require you to give up on some pleasures but I’m sure you'll get your money's worth.
