Some love stories are too big to fit into just one universe.
Ari thinks of herself as an unremarkable middle-aged woman. She works as a teaching assistant, she loves her cat, and she’s battling chronic illness. The only truly remarkable thing about her, in her opinion, is that she’s married to the beautiful Mandira – whom Ari considers to be the most amazing woman on the planet. Every day, they’re living the most profound love story, even if their lives are quite ordinary.
But Ari is haunted by a memory from her childhood in which an immense trauma caused her to do something she still can’t explain: peel back the fabric between realities and look into a parallel world in which a different Ari was living a different life. After three decades of silence, she decides to confide this secret to Mandira one night, assuring her she knows it had to be her childish imagination trying to distract her from the traumatic events she was living through. But Mandira’s response changes everything:
“What if it was real?”
That simple thing, the belief of her wife, opens Ari’s mind to the possibility, and soon she finds herself hearing voices in the wall again and opening portals to find alternate universes in which she and Mandira are living slightly – or completely – different lives. This time Mandira is in on the adventure and there’s no denying that it’s real. Mandira believes Ari has this gift for a reason and that they have a duty to bring their other selves together, but is it safe to interfere in other worlds? And if they venture through a portal, could they be cut off from their own world?
As Ari grapples with her worsening disability, she works on honing her gift for accessing other worlds, with Mandira serving as her moral compass.
But can a power like this ever truly be harnessed?
