The Hanged

Curator: Francesca Bonissone

Artist: Michele Turbanti

In Tarots The Hanged man means sacrifice, a necessary bad condition to reach an objective. The Hanged Man has to wait patiently a change in his situation.

We all are The Hanged, while we wait in line at the post office, at the supermarket or stuck in our cars waiting for a change in our condition. This concept clashes against the hyperproductive society we live in, in which the concept of waiting, meant as a necessary and potentially fertile moment, is not conceivable, but at the same time is something the contemporary world must deal with. Waiting is a hole in the system where “time=money”.

The Hanged is developed for the call Spazio Portici: the main feature of the exposition (the works are hanged from the ceiling) was the starting point for the concept of the work. The work itself consist in four couples of pictures where headshots taken in specific waiting places (post office, supermarket, bus stop and a traffic jam) are put in relation with satellite images of Tourin, which display their generic location (all post offices, all supermarkets, all bus stops and all most congested streets).

The Hanged captures everyday life moments (bored, hanged) and recontextualize them creating city maps in which the single subjects are lost in a “hanged constellation”.
