Michaёl Wogman (Mikhail Vogman) originates from Russia, but lives in Israel since the beginning of Russia's full-scale aggression towards Ukraine in 2022. He graduated from the Department of Jewish Studies of Moscow State University and started his doctoral studies there. For several years he also taught courses on Ancient Jewish History and Literature at the same institution.
Michaёl's main sphere of interest is the Second Temple period and Rabbinic culture (and the shift between them). In his thesis he analysed how Rabbinic exegesis reshaped the figure of Moses as a ruler in comparison to the Hellenistic and the Second Temple sources both in content and in mode of presentation, degrading him from an ideal philosopher-king to a realistic small-scale politician. In his doctoral project at HUJI he focuses on the Tannaitic midrashim in order to show how these and other changes in the representation of Moses in general reflect Roman imperial presence and socio-political realia.
