On our holiday to Bayahibe in the Dominican Republic, our first take-off (on G-OMYT) was aborted. Started take-off down Manchester (MAN) runway 23R, at high speed (around 110 knots) a loud bang (is reported by others), personally I didn't hear it (Port side window seat (27A). Around 325 passengers were on-board at the time, on our way to Punta Cana (PUJ) in the Dominic Republic.
According to media reports, the A330’s number 2, starboard (right hand), engine (Rolls Royce, Trent 772) failed, with fire fighters arriving on the runway as a safety precaution. The aircraft was transported back to the terminal, from where passengers were asked to disembark while the engine and brakes were inspected by engineers.
The runway was temporarily closed, with some flights diverted to Liverpool John Lennon Airport as a result. Thomas Cook organised a replacement Airbus A330-200, which departed five hours after the initial incident.
“We can confirm that an incident took place at Manchester Airport regarding flight TCX314 during take-off to the Dominican Republic. The aircraft developed an engine fault and has returned to stand,” a spokesperson for Thomas Cook Airlines told the media.
The incident has been reported to the AAIB and was investigated as a correspondence investigation, with an addendum.
A replacement Airbus A330-200 registration G-MDBD departed Manchester 5 hours after the rejected takeoff.
