Based on events listed on Nashville-Theatre.com
From September 1st, to December 31st, 2022, what events are happening, where are they happening, what type of event is it, and what capacity does the event have in terms of seating?
It's clear that a lot of events are happening on the weekend, but how many more shows are happening during the week?
Elton John's finale tour booked Nissans Stadium's 70,000 capacity venue this fall. How does it compare to other shows that offer a smaller capacity but occur multiple times, like musicals at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC)?
Many venues are dedicated to a certain type of event, but several offer a wide variety. I took a look at the different venues to see if there are any patterns on size and type of event.
Nashville, TN is known for its robust concert experience. With numerous stages at varying sizes, a live band is easy to find any night of the week. The saturation of music in Nashville is high, and it might be tough to imagine what else you might do for fun aside from going to see a band. I wanted to challenge the notion of Nashville as the "Music City" and quantify the popularity of events.
In order to create a database of events in Nashville I used the website www.Nashville-Theatre.com because it provides a wide variety of events across most of the major venues in the area. To get my data, I used a series of complex web-scraping packages available in Python - requests, BeautifulSoup, Pandas, Regular Expressions, and literal_eval.
This project required a combination of Python coding skills and familiarization with both HTML and JavaScript. The principle challenge in this scraping project was the URLs. How a URL is built dramatically changes how scraping can be automates through a website, and because of the way Nashville-Theatre.com uses URLs, my code needed to be written differently for various parts of the website in order to complete my dataset (e.g. ticketing information was not in the same area as categorical information).
This study is not a conclusive review of all events in Nashville, and the project is based solely on the events listed on this website. Categorical information was only provided for about half of the listings, and appear to be reserved for the most popular events/venues (I believe that this is a paid advertising feature). At times I will refer to the number of events, which is all events in my database, and at times I will refer to category (concerts, theatre, etc.) and I will only be able to use about half of the events in my database to make categorical inferences.
Capacity in this analysis refers to the number of seats that a venue could potentially sell, and this project does not attempt to determine ticket sales, revenue, or remaining seats available.
*Screenshot of shows in September. The initial location that webscraping began for this project. Event name, venue, dates, 'more info' link, and 'book tickets' link was scraped starting here.
*Excerpt from the same URL. Scrolling further down you can see that after a certain point the 'more info' link is no longer available. This pattern continues each month and shows are not necessarily listed in order of appearance, but shows advertising show up first and in chronological order, and then again in chronological order for shows not advertising.
I hypothesized that even though there might be more concerts in Nashville than theatre & musical events, the average capacity at those events would come close to equaling average concert capacity, because they have multiple performances. Some of the most popular shows, like Hamilton, can have up to 15 performances over multiple weeks.
Based on the data scraped from Nashville-Theatre.com detailing the number of most popular events, theatre & musicals accounted for 15.15% of all shows with an average capacity of 6,964, compared to concerts which make up 74.54% with an average capacity of 9,204.
The single largest event in Nashville this fall is Elton John's farewell tour and it is the only non-sporting event listed for Nissan Stadium on Nashville-Theatre.com. The stadium capacity is over 69,000.
Bridgestone Arena offers the largest combined capacity for the season at 640,000 seats across 32 events listed on Nashville-Theatre.com including 22 concerts, 7 theatre & musical productions, and 1 comedian.
The Grand Ole Opry is the single most recurring event. It accounts for nearly 15% of all shows listed on Nashville-Theatre.com this fall. Its combined capacity potential is over 270,000 seats across 63 events. Additionally, the Grand Ole Opry House will also have 13 concerts, 9 variety events, and 1 theatre event, providing another 101,202 seats.
Concerts are clearly the most popular type of event in Nashville. Theatre & musicals and comedy shows are neck and neck for second place.
It would take about 18 individual shows at the Andrew Jackson Hall (TPAC) to equal one show at Bridgestone Arena when it is at full capacity.
Future research could be conducted to compare popularity against capacity factoring in other indicators including ticket sales, price per ticket, and the cost of production.
