Music

I began my journey with music at the age of ten when I started playing trumpet in the fifth grade. In middle school I added the electric bass. Over the years I have experimented with many instruments including: acoustic and electric guitar, upright bass, synthesizers, drums, percussion, flutes, and most of the members of the brass instrument family.

In 2012, I started building my first home recording studio. Since that time, the studio has grown and shrunk, been moved across the country, and changed in other ways I can't remember or explain. I have written, recording, mixed, mastered, and released ten full albums of music, and a couple of singles.

My music is available on all of the major online outlets under the artist name M.F. Bolton.

Colloquia Plantarum

Colloquia Plantarum is my latest project. It is a series of live looping improvisations, that include the use of the Instruo Pocket Scion. By connecting this synthesizer to my plants, I can use the plant's biofeedback to trigger the synth - thus having a musical conversation with the plant.

Many of my studio recordings are created one layer at a time and then mixed together later. As part of this project, I decided to challenge myself to create songs all at one time. The addition of a looper has been crucial for this sonic adventure. Stay tuned for more videos in this series.

Minute Improv Video Series

In 2021, I create a series of layered improvisational music videos. The challenge was to improvise parts on the spot and limit each video to a minute in length. This was a fun creative exercise, and a great way to push my skills across a wide range of instruments. In total I made fifteen of these videos—each with their own unique vibe.
