I just finished watching Team America: World Police, I mean, the Republican National Convention. Placing aside subjectivity and political bias, I find it difficult to watch what 25 million of us just watched and not wince in embarrassment (or at least smirk at the absurdity of it all). For christ sakes, Hulk Hogan was an official keynote speaker introducing the man who is more likely than not to assume the nation's highest office. The Hulkster, at 70 years old, just tore his goddamn shirt in half, exalted the crowd for being "trumpsters", and incited a movement he now coins as "Trump-a-mania". Whichever branch of the multiverse we were formally on, it has officially broken off and branched into a new direction. Wherever we are now, it isn't the real world. We're living in an almost meta, satirical representation of the United States that feels like it was written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Even better, the satirical equivalent is All in The Family, since our Republican nominee is an ignorant traditionalist, like Archie Bunker, whose belligerent rhetoric is reflective of a population that's frustrated, desperate for change, and hopelessly incapable of the bipartisanship required to acquire it. In the other corner of the ring, we have a senile old man who, like Archie B is unwilling to get with the times and let the younger generation have a say. Christ, if folks from other countries were questioning whether the American empire was in decline before tonight, they've most certainly doubled down on that belief this morning. Anyone have a Mandarin dictionary I can study?
