About Department of Physics

Historical Review

The Department of Physics is one of the oldest scientific sections established at the College of Science / Mustansiriyah University in 1963. It began with a small group of teaching staff who mostly graduated from worldwide high-rank universities. In the start-up phase, there had only been laboratories of physics's main topics for pursuing a bachelor's degree in physics.

In 1984, the Physics department improved by involving a wide range of physical topics. That development was associated with the setup of new physics fields coinciding with the evolution of science in the world universities. Subsequently, the department offered postgraduate studies to

pursue a master's degree in Physics (M.Sc.), followed by a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) program in 1992.

Location

The main campus of the Mustansiriyah University lies in the north of Baghdad, and the Department of Physics is located in a suitable position in the main university building. It is spread over three campuses: campus A which includes the lecture rooms, campus B comprising the physical laboratories. Plus, campus C, which contains some of the postgraduate laboratories in addition to the lecture rooms.

Scientific Staff

Nowadays, a large number of scientific-educational staff of high-knowledge scientists, investigators, and specialists are teaching in the department. They are sorted into groups that incorporate professors, assistant professors, lecturers, and researchers who work in various modern physics fields. Several academic staff and researchers from different universities and institutes in Iraq collaborate with the physics department on some projects.

Undergraduate Laboratories

For undergraduate studies, the laboratories provided instruments adequate to give students the principle topics of physics practically. The students will then have various skills to deal with the devices. The department contains laboratories of solid-state physics, optics & lasers, thermodynamics, electronics, atomic physics, electricity, computer science, and numerical analysis.

Scientific Projects and Laboratories

Scientific projects in our department are suggested to involve most of the modern physics fields. The projects are introduced to a scientific committee to confirm the submitted projects' synchronization with the world's scientific progress.

Many topics are included in our section, Nanoelectronics and Spintronics, Optical Physics, Non-linear Optics, Quantum Science Applications,Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, Image Processing Applications, Plasma, Nuclear Physics, Lasers Applications. These fields are available for undergraduate and postgraduate students as projects for their dissertations.

Postgraduate Laboratories

Due to the requirements of scientific and technological progress, advanced laboratories were built in the department of physics. These laboratories are thin films, spray pyrolysis, solid-state materials, nanotechnology, polymers, molecular spectroscopy, image processing, plasma, and nuclear physics.
