Micah Turner is an award-winning photographer from Eastern Kentucky. Everywhere he goes, he always carries a camera as you never know what you might see. He explores his passions in both nature and railroad-based photography, with some individual photos too.
As a unit train eases under the Lynch 3 loadout, Loadout Operator Nathan (Bucket) Belcher works the controls on the inside to assure the train is loaded correctly.
A train destined for the Eastman Chemical plant in Kingsport, TN, finishes loading its last car of the set of 90 just as the sun waves goodbye over this Eastern Kentucky community.
One of the first in a series of re-edited photos (more of which can be found above and below this photo), we look back at an unused shot of a bird that had just found it's dinner. I recall being in a nature-kick, patiently waiting in the grass for some sort of action. Looks like I found it.
An RJ Corman crew works to rerail an ES40DC Gevo at Lynch 3. During the runaround move earlier that morning, the crew failed to spot a broken rail in which grounded CSX 5320 and derailed the trailing truck of CSX 270. See the photos below for more.
NS 80E is rolling down the lead to the East Yard in Williamson, West Virginia. We had opted to make the half hour drive from Pikeville to this very active NS mainline; something we would see clearly.
CSX 911 leads M693 across the Boones Creek trestle in the sunset hour on it's journey south towards Bostic, Spartanburg, Agusta, and Waycross.
R614 thunders past the old L&N searchlight signals on the north end of the Wilhoit siding. Sadly, ML1 is now out of service and set to be removed, thus it is unknown how much longer this shot will be available...
CSX 1851, painted for the NC&STL railroad, leads an empty E103 as it sits tied down in Ranger, West Virginia. As of writing, 1851 is the newest heritage unit in the fleet while 1902 is in the shops being painted. Excluding 1902 and the extra unit yet to be painted, we are only missing 1877 at this point, which is painted for the C&EI. Our heritage collection is drawing to a close, folks.
CSX 81 leads R236 through Blackey, Ky, framed through the iconic Blackey bridge and "Welcome To Blackey" sign. Blackey was once an important junction for the L&N between the EK mainline to Whitesburg and the Rockhouse Creek Branch to Deane. After CSX was established in the 90's and the Deane Connection was built, roles reversed as the Rockhouse was formed and established as the main whilst the original main was reclassified as the Whitesburg Branch.
