You are the manager of a new team of nurses with a variety of experiences. Your team is comprised of new graduates, nurses with experience in critical care units, emergency departments, as well as public health programs. This team has been working for about 2 years after a trial was proven successful. The role of your team is to go to patient houses and provide in community clinical care, for example IV antibiotics or IV hydration, as ordered by the teams physician. Your team is an extension of the regions home care program and acts as a referral source for the homecare care managers when their patients require urgent medical care.
Recently you have been told by your director that the team needs to adopt a new skill, central line access. This is the result of patient reviews as well as a recommendation from the teams physicians. This is a skill that some of your nurses used in previous care settings, whereas some of the nurses have never done this before. You have been given three months to train your team and begin using this skill.
With what you have learned about change management, what are some strategies that you would use to begin implementing this change?
What leadership style(s) would you use to implement this change while ensuring that you avoid resistance from the team?
As mentioned change resistance can be caused by a number of different factors, what specific factors exist in this team that you would monitor to avoid change resistance?
It has been one month since the team started accessing central lines and everything seems to be going well. You have successfully implemented the new skill with the team, congratulations!
Now that the skill has been adopted, what stage would you say you are at in the change? What do you think you should do to make it "stick"?
We have listed a few change management strategies, or systems. Can you find others? How are these strategies/systems different then the ones we listed? How are they similar?
Have you ever lead a change for a team that you worked with? Did you use any change strategies or systems? In hindsight, what would you do differently? What would you do the same?
Describe the feelings you experienced when you changed how you crossed your arms. Have you been practicing? Are you becoming more comfortable with change?
