Project Graduation
ENjOY THE JOURNEY
Our seniors have had a high school experience vastly different from that of their parents, older siblings and friends.
As a community-sponsored, parent organized event, we hope to give our graduates a special and safe graduation
celebration. This is a chemical/substance-free event that allows the graduates to celebrate with each other one final
time before going off in their own directions into adulthood.
What is Project Graduation?
In 1979, the community of Oxford Hills, Maine experienced seven alcohol and drug-related teen deaths during the
commencement season of that year. The community rallied together to offer the next year’s seniors a safe and
alternative event at the local fairgrounds, and called it “Project Graduation”. The event was a huge success and
became the model for the nation, helping to protect the lives of graduating seniors in all 50 states.
Marshwood High School has been participating in Project Graduation since the 1980’s. Each year,
approximately 85% of the Marshwood graduating class attends the all-night event.
The South Berwick Police Department supports this community-wide planning process that strives to create a caring,
supportive and SAFE alcohol & other drug-free environment for our teenagers. Each year, the committee plans the
fun-filled event with new things to surprise the senior class.
Please consider helping us to give our seniors this one last “Marshwood Memory” before they head off into their adult lives.
