Course Times and Descriptions

On Beyond Searching: Librarians’ Roles in Resident Research

Instructors: Dr. Bill Corser & Dr. Sam Wisniewski, Statewide Campus System, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Michigan State University

Time: 8:00AM-10:00AM

Place: Capitol III

Description: Want to get an overview of key topics for librarians who may help residents with their research? Both DO and MD residents are facing increasing pressure to do research, so medical and health sciences librarians are likely to see more requests for help in this area. This course is ideal for librarians who wish to understand the entire life cycle of a resident's research project.

Wake Up To Mindfulness

Instructor: April Kaiserlian, LMSW, Grand Rapids Center for Mindfulness.

Time: 8:00AM-10:00AM

Place: Capitol IV

Description: Wake up to mindfulness! Wake up to life! You are given this one, precious life. It will be filled with moments of joy and struggle as well as moments that are ordinary and quiet. Mindfulness is a simple, yet powerful practice that can help you cultivate a more calm, clear and compassionate approach to each moment of life. This presentation will offer an introduction to the practice of mindfulness, the research behind it as well as formal and informal practices you can use at work and home.

Introduction to Licensing Electronic Resources

Instructor: Stephanie Davis, MBA, MS, Manager of Group Purchasing: Midwest Collaborative for Library Services.

Time: 10:30AM-12:30PM

Place: Capitol III

Description: This basic workshop is designed for library staff who are new to negotiating licenses for electronic resources. This workshop would also be beneficial to library staff who do not negotiate with vendors, but who do work with electronic resources and/or ERM systems and need to understand license terms. The workshop will address the basic concepts of contract law (licenses as contracts) and offer a hands-on look at the components of a standard licensing agreement. [Note: this is an introductory workshop and is not geared toward experienced staff who have already negotiated licenses.]

True North: Finding Free Evidence-Based Public Health Resources

Instructor: Cecilia Vernes, MS-LIS, Lamar Soutter Library: University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Time: 10:30AM-12:30PM

Place: Capitol IV

Description: This course will cover how to go about strategizing searching for freely available public health resources and how best to evaluate them for bias and evidence quality. The participants will complete prework. For part of the session the instruction will focus on the public health topics of PFAs in water contamination, which was identified by the conference education committee as one of the top three public health issues in the state of Michigan. The participants will be asked to share some of their prework findings and may do some group work to focus collaboration and idea-sharing.
