As we are in the midst of a Global Pandemic, we realise the toll it may take on not only those with pre-existing mental health conditions but everyone and anyone as it is an extremely uncertain and frightening time. We want to make sure that you know that you're not alone and also provide useful information in terms of Advice from the HSE on looking after your mental health throughout this time and also some ways to distract yourself and keep your mind occupied!
Here are some tips we have comprised ourselves that might be helpful to you:
- Stay connected- Whatsapp, Facetime, calls or texts make it extremely easy to stay in touch with those who are important to you. You could use this time to reach out to old pals and also keeping in touch with current. This time is also the perfect opportunity to strengthen relationships within your own family!
- Limit your time on Social Media- Its important to chose your sources of news and media wisely as there is a lot of scaremongering and false information circulating. Limiting yourself to set times during the day to check for updates, can help to protect you from overwhelm and confusion
- Maintain sleeping pattern- Sleep disruption is known to have a massive impact on mood and over all mental well-being. Without the usual structure of everyday life which includes college or work, its easy to slip into unhealthy sleeping habits. Maintaining your usual sleep and wake up time will be essential to maintaining structure in your life, in turn having a positive impact on your mood. Scheduling a balanced range of activities in your day is also important- including physical exercise, connecting with others and perhaps some relaxing activities ie. Yoga or meditation - can also help with your sleep quality. If the uncertainty of the current situation is causing you to lose sleep, talk about your worries with others rather than dealing with them alone.
- Practice self care- Do something new- Have you been considering learning a new skill or trying a new hobby? Go for it. Write or journal your thoughts.Take 10 minutes, and jot down whatever is on your mind. Mentally release those things as you write. Create a cozy space.Does your bedroom look they way you want it to? If it doesn’t, maybe add some candles or fun throw pillows. By building a space that feels warm and inviting, you establish an inviting place for when tough times arise.
