Greater Boston is home to about 4.8 million people, with the City of Boston housing approximately 690,000 and Cambridge housing about 120,000. Boston has 35 colleges and universities, making it a young and vibrant place to live! It offers much to explore -- parks, restaurants, historic sites, museums, theater, music, and festivals. Day trips from Boston include visits to the beach, the White Mountains, the Berkshires, and the Maine Coast.
Mass General Brigham residents, fellows, and staff live in Boston, Cambridge (right across the river from Boston) and surrounding towns, many of which are accessible using the subway ("the T"), which has a stop right at the hospital. Both Boston and Cambridge are comprised of multiple neighborhoods, each with a slightly different character. Many residents and fellows also live in nearby Somerville, as well as multiple other surrounding towns accessible by bus or T. For those taking public transportation, the hospital offers subsidized passes. Trainee parking is also available for purchase for residents and fellows who want to live farther from the hospital and drive into work
The patients we serve at Mass General Brigham for Children come from numerous communities throughout the Boston metropolitan area and beyond. Mass General Brigham for Children has three vibrant community health centers in Revere, Chelsea, and Charlestown, as well an on-campus practice and a suburban practice in Waltham. Additional Med-Peds practices care for children in the Everett and North End community health centers and the Back Bay practice. We serve as the pediatric referral center for the Cambridge Health Alliance, and we also collaborate with several affiliated health centers and private practices throughout Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Approximately 11% of Mass General Brigham patients prefer a language other than English for medical communication. The most common languages among our patients are Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Arabic.
Our fellows have plenty of time to explore the city and surrounding areas. They enjoy kayaking on the Charles River, visiting beaches along the Atlantic Coast or at peaceful Walden Pond, and following the perennially competitive Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots. Fall in Boston means apple-picking season. Harvard ID holders get free entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts, the ICA, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Mass General Brigham offers discounted tickets to the Children's Museum and the Science Museum.
