Since I started my campaign, I've been asked, "Why the loon?"
I designed Louie the Loon as a mascot for my campaign because I wanted something memorable but also something fun.
Make no mistake, I'm used to working hard to achieve my goals and there are plenty of serious issues that I want to work on if I'm elected.
I also know that the hard work gets a little easier when you're listening to your favorite song on the radio, or working with a good friend. Even the worst day at work isn't quite so bad if you can handle it with a sense of humor.
My grandpa, Louis "Louie" Meyman, was a farmer in Waseca county and alongside my grandma, Verna, worked hard, planting crops in the Spring, harvesting in the Fall, taking care of the livestock all year round, and dealt with all the other tasks that farmers deal with every day, on top of raising four kids. He knew the value of hard work and determination, but he also knew the value of a good laugh, especially when dealing with hard times. It was something that he passed down to his children, and something that my parents passed down to me.
So, why the loon?
Obviously, it's our state bird, for one thing. I've lived most of my life near Loon Lake in Waseca, for another.
But mostly? He's a reminder that even when there's hard work ahead, or when life gets difficult or dark, sometimes a little laughter can be enough to help you make it through.
Louie the Loon may be a cartoon,
but I'm serious about working hard to help Minnesotans.
